WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD - INFORMATIONAL POST
May 13, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin

Posted on 05/13/2019 6:03:13 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

Our 'Greeneyes' has gone missing, so I have been asked to keep the Weekly Garden Thread rolling until she returns. If anyone knows her in Real Life, please post here and let us know what her situation is!

That said, I will be posting once a week, and I will TRY to stick to her schedule of a Friday Night/Saturday Morning Weekly Post, but it depends upon what is going on here at MY farm. (It's Spring; it's BUSY!)

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

The Ping List for this group is HUGE, so if you want on or off, please FReepmail Diana in Wisconsin or Tilted Irish Kilt (Backup!)

Thank You!

It’s early in Minnesota but we enjoyed an asparagus tort and rhubarb crisp yesterday.

The best statement ever for learning !
Since some of us are in Springtime selection and seeding, now is the time to ask questions about our plans and plants.

I have asked several FReepers if they had heard from her as she has gone missing since April 20-21,. She also posts alot on the “Q” thread. It has been suggested to me that maybe she got caught up in the flood situation they had a few weeks ago. I have kept her in my prayers. She sounds like a wonderful women and I wanted to join the Weekly Garden Thread. If there is a ping list please add me to it. I will continue to pray for her well being!

Thank you, Diana. Many of us who are used to her presence on another thread are concerned. I hope someone knows her contact info or she shows us.

It's been raining nearly every day here at Lake of the Ozarks. Our asparagus has responded accordingly.
We like to bake it on a cookie sheet with a bit of Olive oil and panko crumbs.

Yesterday's lunch was a feast !

I hope so, too! It’s nice to have your privacy, but when you go missing, it’s scary for the rest of us! Prayers up that this is just a temporary setback for her and that she’ll be back soon.

Hi.

I tried planting cauliflower and brussels sprouts with poor results.

If anyone has success with either, can you share your DETAILED experience from soil to seed to fertilizer to ideal conditions.

For example, I planted both as seedlings indoors.

When I planted the cauliflower they went right to flowering and didn't produce an edible head.

The brussel sprouts grew to a good size but didn't produce much to eat.

ALSO, what is the best seedling mix. I've tried a variety and mixed my own and they all work but I wonder if there's one mix that's the best.

Thank you.

Thank you for picking up the PING list until greeneyes returns - although I'm a bit lost without her weekly updates.

Not really planting yet in Mid-Konnecticut - too cold and much too much rain - can't work the gardens yet (and our seedlings are busting out!)

Prayers up for greeneyes and her "Hubby".

I hate to ask a question regarding a loathsome plant, but I must. It is thistle.

How I hate this invasive menace.

I have raised acres of pachysandra here in the Pittsburgh, PA. area for around thirty years, and now, in a few beds I have an invasion of this SICKENING plant.

It's been sneaking in for around four years now.

I've been doing research on trying to kill it without killing the pachysandra.

I'm going to need something I can spray on.

I found a product:

MILESTONE --- a broadleaf herbicide for Range and Pasture control. It is noted specifically on their site that it can be used on large beds of pachysandra with no damage to the pachysandra. That sounds good.

______________

If anyone here has any knowledge of this subject please pass it along.

You would think that a guy who had raised Pachysandra for thirty years would have all the answers on this, but I DON'T. I think we all know we're always learning something about our plants.

Have a great spring and I hope I hear from someone.

Excellent meme. Love it!

I’m sitting on a Jung’s order right now waiting for some stuff to clear the checking account before I pull the trigger. I could spend SO much money there!

This year we’ve acquired a bunch of citrus and some apricot trees (moorpark). The apricot trees came from Fred’s (actually Van Zyverden) and I only paid $13 each for 3ft trees. They’re in giant animal feed containers (25gal container equivalent) for the forseeable future.

Hubby got several of those 55gal barrels that were previously used for foodstuffs. One of them had Sake in it (whew it smells strong!). We will use them for strawberry barrels. We found the barrel caddy thingies at either northern tool or harbor freight to turn them around so they get sun on all sides. We’re going to ranch strawberry plants this summer. Shumway has a deal on strawberries, 50 for $18, 25 everbearing, 25 junebearing.

I’ve also got a ‘wishlist’ cart each at briteleaf nursery and fourwinds growers.

One of our local vets raises sheep and gets some sort of feed for them in giant black containers (that we use for our citrus). She’s agreed to let us buy whatever she get for $5 each. I’ll be putting raspberries with small trellises in some of those. Most raspberries aren’t happy in the ground here, too many diseases. The 2 I’ve had in pots on my driveway for several years (that aren’t supposed to be happy in my locale) have done splendidly so I’m going to be expanding that little operation and ranch any varieties I find that aren’t ‘variety protected’.

Hopefully everyone is doing OK with our grand solar minimum weather wackiness. It really needs to stop raining for a little while here and then rain when necessary after that :) I’m not picky or anything LOL.

I’m thankful for the suggestions a few weeks ago when my tomatoes damped off. I had done nearly every one of the suggestions but ONE. I reused my plant label stakes but did NOT bleach those. Just didn’t think about it. The suggestions got me to thinking about my ‘process’ and voila, remembered using the labels w/o bleaching them. Argh. I’ve started another flat of them (bleached EVERYTHING that didn’t move fast enough this time!) for fall tomatoes. Hoping for better things with those.

Diana, thanks for stepping up. Yes, prayers for greeneyes. It's been a cool and wet spring here in west Michigan. Almost everything is planted except for green beans and there is no rush on those. Feeling good this spring and we are way ahead of schedule. Best wishes to all!

I’m going to have to look into that herbicide. My yard is invaded with thistles as well. I’ve tried digging them up, mowing them when they’re small, etc. All that happens when I mow them is they bloom at 3” tall and still spread the seeds. And are short enough they hide their deadly spikiness until you STEP on them. Augh.

Been wondering about GreenEyes. Hope everything is alright.

The wet spring is dragging on here in Central Missouri. We caught a gap in the rain on Saturday and got into the kitchen garden for some serious weed-pulling. I don't know how many cartloads of weeds Mrs. Augie hauled to the compost, but it was a lot. I need about three rain-free days in a row before it will be try enough to till.

Normally I'm putting tomato plants in the ground by the middle of May, but with the cold and wet weather, and all of the other projects I'm working on, I haven't been motivated enough to even buy them. I guess I need to get that done this week.

I've been making steady gains with the pond project. Main dock section was built in April. Gangway section was built yesterday. I finished fabrication of reinforcement brackets for the corners, hinge plates, and pin sleeves yesterday evening. Won't be long before it's ready to move to the deep end and drive the pipes that will hold it in place.

Thanks for stepping in and giving me my fix. Apparently you have her PING list?

I tried to locate her as I thought we had communicated by eMail but found nothing. Perhaps Jim Robinson can ping her for us...
