Recently, I witnessed a young black male cut across my yard, duck between my neighbors two cars and try the doors of both, before breaking into the unlocked one. I opened my back door and yelled, I see you getting into that car! He took off running. I called the police and then posted to the (admittedly sometimes racially charged) Nextdoor app, in the hopes that my neighbors would check the locks on their cars and homes.
Break-ins are fairly common in my neighborhood, and this isnt the first time that Ive witnessed what appeared to be a theft and called the police. It was, however, the first time I was certain the suspicious person was a black man. I immediately felt a pang of guilt for calling the police and havent been able to stop thinking about it, given the tragic way things too often end between police and people of color.
I feel an obligation to my family and my neighbors to report crimes. But Id rather have my car broken into than have a persons life ruined by my 911 call. And honestly, I dont even know if its a crime to open someones unlocked vehicle.
If the incident had been a forced entry or violent in any way, I would feel less torn about having called the police. And really, people should know better than to leave their cars unlocked. I sincerely hope the young man wasnt apprehended but instead was just scared off and wont lurk around my home again. But what if he had been arrested? I also shudder to think how many young black men vaguely matching his description were harassed by officers after my call.
Did I do the right thing by calling the police?

And car insurance rates in NYC are sky high. How does this idiot think that non-reporting of auto theft helps people of color who have a hard time making their insurance premiums?!
Or just the fact that the owner of that vehicle needs his/her dang car?
Jeez, the author of this swill should be embarrassed as heck to be such a frickin’ lousy neighbor and citizen.
Liberalism IS a mental disorder. Here is proof.
Not if it was in Virginia where the governor is known to run around in black face.
Therefore, you wouldn’t be able to absolutely claim it was a black man.
Love your neighbor as you love yourself. Was he breaking into your neighbor's car?
I wouldn’t use a pistol. Too much chance of missing a clean kill.
Earth...of the 50s.
But Id rather have my car broken into than have a persons life ruined by my 911 call.
THIS IS WHY break-ins are common in your neighborhood.
Crime is rampant because criminals know they're unlikely to get caught and face consequences.
The crime rates rise. People with means to leave get out. Businesses close. What's left behind is poverty, the poor, and crime.
The cycle of crime creating poverty continues.
Just give the guy your underage daughter too while you’re at it, loser.
+1
But it identified as a bicycle.
I think it is interesting that liberals see a need for someone who can tell them right from wrong. Isn’t that what religion does?
“...posted to the Nextdoor app...” Well, there’s the problem. Two guys tried to break into my wife’s van. I scared them off (big whoop — they were already wetting themselves when I got to ‘em). Called the cops, who did their thing. Then I walked, on my own two feet, to my neighbors up and down the block, talking to them and letting them know what happened so they could do what they think best to protect themselves. I did not:
-Post on some Nextdoor app so I could feel important
-Put pictures up on Facebook so people would feel sorry for my becoming a victim of Trump’s presidency.
-Put images on Twitter of what I was eating for dinner when someone tried to commit a crime against me.
I went face-to-face because I care about my neighbors. It’s what neighbors do*. This creature isn’t a neighbor; this creature is another attention-starved wannabe, just tryin’ to keep their victimization going.
*Unless your neighbor is Steve, cuz that’s a whole ‘nother thread
Good point.

No, you did the wrong thing. You wasted the time of the police who were busy donut munching. And if they had caught him, so what?
The guy is black, so he gets a free pass. Courts won’t and can’t even handle misdemeanor cases like this any more.
“And honestly, I dont even know if its a crime to open someones unlocked vehicle”
Yes it is a burglary and classified as a felony. At least in sanity town.
A vivid example of how sick a society we’ve become when propaganda has reached a point to cause some to think that a crime depends on skin color.
In this racially charged climate whites have lost all instincts of self preservation.
If you feel the need to question your actions concerning said event, then the answer is obviously no. /sarc-eye roll
The writer was from Missouri where this happened. The NYT columnists answer was clear that the man had witnessed a crime and was right to call the police. His answer also discusses the concerns the writer had about police interaction with young Black men. His conclusion:”Your hesitance about involving law enforcement points to a larger crisis of trust, one undergirded by worrying racial disparities throughout the criminal-justice system. The best response, however, isnt to turn a blind eye to property crimes. Its to get involved in campaigns to reform policing and prosecution.”
And once the poor thug is in the car, is he safe in New York from prosecution? That’s what happens to the millions breaking into the country.
This happened in Missouri.
