MASSACHUSETTS ....... The Fig Newton is named after Newton, Massachusetts .

I grew up in Newton and loved Fig Newtons as a kid. Still do,in fact.

And BTW...Newton is known for something else: We gave the world Barney Frank (aka: Barney Fag).

Back when they were going to name the state, they were going to name it after the great river that flows through it.

“Columbia”.

“No - folks will get us confused with the District of Columbia. Let’s call it ‘Washington’ instead!”

True story!

"Rugby claims to be the geographic center of North America and a monument stands in the city to signify this. The monument features flags of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, modern calculations that take on account the distortions caused by cartographic projections show that center is 145 miles southwest of Rugby, in a town called Center, North Dakota."

I mean, it's not too far off.

There is a McDonalds and BK literally a few yards out of Mont-peculiar on the way the Barre. Not really a hardship, since MP is about the size of a postage stamp.

I believe the author made the distinction, by listing the State and then noting the ‘/capital’ status of DC.
