Three generations back, Princess Margaret drew the short straw.
Then when it came unbonny Prince Charlie's turn to lose the draw, the fashion magazines were at the pinnacle of their power and demanded an equal voice with the tabloids on this go-around, hence we got Princess Di.
For the next generation, when Harry rather than William drew the short one, nostalgia for the good old days was rampant in the UK MSM, and they reached back in history for their inspiration, to select yet another American divorcee. But this time, left-wing newspapers like the Guardian absolutely insisted that the Gods Of Diversity / Affirmative Action be appeased, so they settled on a Divorced American Woman Of Color. And she had to be an actress as well, so that the foul taint of Hollywood would ensure that this could not possibly end up being a "boring" choice.
The Queen reportedly objected to Markle, and tearfully pleaded for a second choice. The media went back to the drawing board and came up with a Tranny from the East End. That settled that.
The UK tabloids are now gleefully rubbing their hands over their choice for the current generation - William & Kate's progeny. I can't in good conscience post the spoiler here, but let me assure you, it's a real doozy!

Don’t want to go all psycho-babble but I think Harry had some issues regarding his mother’s death and was ripe to be manipulated by this master manipulater. The fact that she is receiving a lot of criticism only strengthens his loyalty for now, but it will not last.
