It’s time to talk about what it means to be white in the United States.
That’s what I was trying to do Saturday afternoon at the Politics and Prose bookstore in Northwest Washington when I was interrupted by a group of white nationalists. Ironically, the protesters’ chant — “This land is our land” — served only to reinforce my point.
For too long, many white Americans have avoided this conversation, and we’ve done so for a reason: We don’t have to see the color white. Race scholars often argue that white privilege broadly means not needing to reflect on whiteness. White is the default setting, the assumed norm. A white American does not have to think about being white when walking down the street — while people marked as not-white are often noticed and surveilled. White people have the superpower of invisibility.
Yet with the rise of President Trump’s brand of resentment politics, American whiteness is increasingly hard to overlook. Trumpian rhetoric defines white identity not by shared values but by shared resentments. Whiteness, in this telling, is under siege. Walled behind Trump’s claim that the country is “full,” and his equivocations on white extremism, lies the notion that immigrants and citizens of color are usurping the privileges of whiteness. This narrative is then amplified by increasingly emboldened white nationalists like the ones who sought to shout me down Saturday.
Trump did not invent insecure whiteness. He is only a skilled manipulator of the fears at its heart.

Nothing would make me happier than seeing the author of this article and others like him stranded on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Baltimore at 1 AM. I can just imagine his pleading as he's robbed and beaten to death "But I'm on your side guys - I hate white people too!"

Nobody demanding that we have a “conversation about race” is willing to listen to differing perspectives. They want to dictate the terms of what’s acceptable in the conversation and their sole intent is to get the “other” person to come around to their way of thinking. They are fascists.

Joe Q. Public sees that as an expression of modesty of self-deprecation. For that reason, he lets it pass.
IN PRIVATE —in his family, among friends or in his house or worthip— that same critic NEVER says “WE white people”.
And that’s because he and his do NOT see themselves as white. Rest assured that he is happy that whites mistake him for being so; he derives many advantages from that repeated, often lifelong misconception.

We are being replaced. The problem is not the color of the newcomers; the problem is that we no longer demand assimilation, and our elites reject assimilation with contempt. Hey, hey, ho, ho, western civ has got to go. We don't expect newcomers to learn our language. We don't teach them American history or civics. We import tens of millions of people from countries with no tradition of the rule of law, the inherent rights of citizens, respect for private property and limited government, and we encourage them do denounce as racist any expectation that they conform culturally to us.
We will soon be majority-minority. The democratic party is now a racial/tribal party demanding tribute from anyone with a lighter skin tone than their own. People sneak across the border illegally and go to the front of the line in government preference systems.
The most successful country in the history of the world is committing suicide. We had a nice run. It may already be too late to reverse course.

Indeed. Way too many people only know of MLK from “I have a dream” without knowing or realizing what else he believed and stood for. He was no more ‘colorblind’ than a rainbow is colorless.
