Obesity significantly increases risk of serious disease and early death, warn researchers
ITV News ^ | 4/29/2019 | itv report

Being obese is linked to a significantly higher chance of serious disease and early death than being a healthy weight, research on more than 2.8 million adults suggests. The chance of suffering serious illness goes up with increasing weight gain, experts analysing health, death and sickness data from UK adults found. How much does the risk increase as your BMI rises? Presented at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO) in Glasgow, the study found that people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 35 were at 70% higher risk of developing heart failure than their healthy weight peers. Even a BMI of 25 to 30 increased the risk by 20%, while a BMI of 35 to 40 more than doubled the risk and a BMI of 40 to 45 almost quadrupled the risk compared to people of a normal weight. The study also found that compared with normal weight individuals, a BMI of 25 to 30 increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes and sleep apnoea by more than double, while a person with a BMI of 30 to 35 was more than five times as likely to develop Type 2 diabetes and almost six times as likely to develop sleep apnoea. his BMI was also linked to a 50% higher risk of dying prematurely from any cause compared to people of a normal weight. Credit: PA For those with a BMI of 35 to 40, the risk of Type 2 diabetes was almost nine times higher, and 12 times higher for sleep apnoea. People with severe obesity (BMI of 40 to 45) were 12 times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes and had a risk of sleep apnoea that was 22 times greater.

"It will soon be the same with health care insurance."

You bring up a good point. What if they do it based on BMI? That would be a travesty.

Agreed. The health insurance adjustment sounds great to me.

I lift 3 times a week, and I do hill sprints. People look at me like I’m a nut job. (I might be a little) I’m in great shape, especially for a man in his 40’s.

If you eat mostly vegetables/some fruit and chicken/fish/eggs, you don’t need to fast or count calories.

Isn't that the idea? A healthy people don't clamour for free government healthcare and other services related to dietary-induced disability.

How many obesity-related illnesses are a result of the types of diets that make people overweight to begin with? Heavy on the sugar, starches, processed foods, and chemical God-only-knows-what formulas. We all knew growing up that delicious but sketchy stuff was for occasional consumption only.

What government defines as food these days [and then funnels into school lunch rooms] IS downright sickening.

Obesity Government dietary advice significantly increases risk of serious disease and early death.

"As obvious as it is, most people do absolutely nothing to correct it."

The truth is, everyone knows what the answer is (diet and exercise), that's the easy part. The hard part is putting it into execution. People instinctively want the easy way out. That's why there's a billion dollar industry built around weight loss, heck it might be a trillion dollar industry. The truth is simple, eat more fruits and vegetables, less processed meats and unhealthy snacks.

You are right about the health club, I see the same thing. However, the biggest impact you can have on weight loss is the diet part and not the exercise part. It has to be a lifestyle not a temporary change.

Skinfold calipers are really the only way to go (unless you have access to the really sophisticated stuff). I have an electronic unit and it’s garbage as far as a percentage, but accurate relative to itself from measurement to measurement.

Using outliers to disprove what is a known fact is not good science.

Of course. We are talking about distributions here. But in my experience, studying the outliers is can be very informative in learning the causes of a systemic problem. Many engineers will ignore outliers simply because they are outliers, but in many cases the outliers are your best friend. So, WHY was Churchill able to live to 90 with a crappy lifestyle? In this case, I suspect the answer is pretty easy.

I ran 15 miles a couple of days ago. The number of calories burned was just a hair more than a double bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a shake.

Call me crazy, I could be wrong, but I also heard this rumor that smoking meth isn’t too healthy as well. Now where’s my grant money?

As obvious as it is, most people do absolutely nothing to correct it.

Many DO try but are getting really bad advice on how to do it. There has been remarkable research in the last 10 years on how bad high carbohydrate (and sugar) diets are for people. Even as recommended by the US Gov.

I am KETO and am doing great.

Exercise though if you do it a lot, the weight falls off fast as hell. 20 years ago I was unemployed and a friend asked me to help him in his landscaping business, Monday thru Saturday, and no joke in 2 months I lost 50 pounds. People thought I had AIDs lol. But that was real ass busting work, 12 hours a day raking lawns, digging up trees, cutting lawns, raking up grass clippings and I didnt change mu eating habits at all, matter of fact I was drinking a lot as well.

If they use the BMI approximation (tape test OR height/weight ratio), this article is falsely premised. If they use the immersion test, which differentiates lean mass, they may have something.

"I suspect the answer is pretty easy."

In Churchill's case, I chalk it up to dumb luck. Look at his early life, he was almost killed by Pathans in the Malakand campaign, he was captured by Boers and escaped during the Boer war and was in one of the last great calvary charges during the re-conquest of the Sudan where he almost got speared. The guy was just lucky. This does not even mention when he took a commission in WWI and went into the trenches in France. That may not be scientific, but it's the truth!!

I am Keto also...and fast a few days a week. Feel great and have great workouts (I bike and lift).

My BMI is around 22 but because I am lifting, I don't look like a skeleton.

Just had steak and eggs for breakfast and will probably have a spinach salad with almonds, raw broccoli, and a scoop of tuna salad (with Ken's Blue Cheese dressing) for early dinner (around 3 pm).

When I started Keto, the weight (fat) dropped off so fast it was scary.

Love it.

BMI is based on the quack science of somatotyping.

Oh really? LOL

The BMI was developed in the 1830's by a mathematician who came up with a simple formula to estimate 'fatness' in the days before computers and calculators. It's an estimate and it over and under-estimates fatness depending on a number of factors, e.g., height, muscle, etc.

How could BMI be based on somatotyping? Sheldon didn't propose the concept until the 1940's - 100 years later.

Very encouraging, thanks.

For me too, weight came of easily without hunger, counting calories or cravings. I fast 1 day a week for now.

Good stuff.
