Lori Loughlin and Husband 'Didn't Realize That What They Were Doing Was Illegal': Source
People ^ | 4/24/19 | STEVE HELLING

Lori Loughlin and her husband Mossimo Giannulli didn’t fully grasp that their alleged bribery in the college admissions scandal was illegal, a source familiar with the case tells PEOPLE.

“You read the complaint and they look like criminal masterminds,” the source tells PEOPLE. “But they really didn’t know the legalities of what was going on. They’re not lawyers and they’re not experts. They were parents who simply wanted to make sure that their daughters got into a good school.”

**SNIP**

“Calling in favors, donating money to the alumni association, hiring consultants. Those are all things that parents do,” says the source. “And so they gave money to this consultant, not entirely knowing everything that was going to be done. When it all fell apart, nobody was as surprised as they were that they were in trouble.”

There wasn’t any INTENT, you see, so therefore they can’t be prosecuted. It’s really all so simple.

The elitist liberal mindset in full view. Pay a school to get your kid in ahead of others. Pay a judge off (”campaign donation”) to get out of something only little people should be charged with, etc.....

I think a decent lawyer could get it in front of a jury during summations.

From what has been posted on another thread it sounds like the defense strategy is actually slightly different than ignorance of the law. Apparently the defense team will try to make the case that the defendants were ignorant about how the money they paid the "consultant" was being used. Their defense is: "We paid this guy several hundred thousand dollars to get our daughter into USC because he had a legitimate business, he seemed reputable, and he had done it many times for others. We had no idea he was using our money to bribe admissions staff at the school."

Mossimo is a global businessman w/ clothing stores in Australia Latin America Mexico Japan and the Philippines.
Hard to believe he didn know he was engaged in money laundering to get his daughter into a school.
Or is that the way he routinely conducts business?

My views are similar to yours. It’s a flawed system that’s had nothing to do with merit for decades.

I do not condone their behavior, but I can see where they did not see it as being illegal since everyone in their bubble has likely been getting away it.

IMO, she should be fined but the idea of putting her in jail for trying to scam the college admission system is a joke. The entire admission system is a joke. How do you think Bush’s and Clinton’s kids got into college? How about 90% of the sons and daughters of senators and representatives? There already is a defacto bribery system in place. What Loughlin did was grubby and crass, but the idea that she damaged some well-working system is ludicrous.

yes. unqualified minority kids are given spots just to make the school diverse. Being “rich white people” is actually a hindrance these days.
IF these had been Will Smiths kids, there would have been no need, Willow and Jaden would be in regardless of their grades. and if Will had offered up $$, we’d certainly never had heard about it.

The problem I see with that defense is he had the kids get their pictures taken rowing to get in on the rowing team. Any normal thinking person would have bat signals being sent up all over the place. How are they going to explain that one? I’ll bet they also have incriminating e-mails to shoot down this defense. If the only evidence they had was them giving this guy the money, I don’t think charges would have been brought. These two should be worried about their kids. The kids obviously participated in this fraud (the pictures of them on the rowing team) and perhaps that will be the next thing the prosecutors do is try to get indictments on their kids.

What lori and her husband don’t realize is they are white, only people of color get a free pass and can use this excuse, I didn’t know. This is the only time where people of color would swallow their arrogance and admit it so they can reap the rewards and get off scot free.

Didn't Lori accidentally pay someone to take the SAT test for her daughter too?

Ignorance is no excuse.

I know 2 instances where the criteria (high SAT score, smart enough to go from 11th to college, at the top) was definitely there, but the money and position was not.. and the person did not get into Yale. The 2nd instance, the person was hispanic without a hispanic last name, so missed out on lesser cost for college.
Elizabeth Warren used that “heritage”to gain access by lying.. is there any difference in that and the Hollywood crowd using their money.. Not that I agree, but Warren needs to be held to account also, and she won’t be..

These people have advisors for everything in their lives.

Interior Designers
Landscapers-—property vegetation
Landscapers——body shaving
Clothes
Jewelry
Makeup
Hair
Cars
Food
Publicity
Investments

EVERYTHING

They don’t seem to be able to function without hiring help.

How did they fail to hire help to make this kind of $500,000 decision???

That bribe alone represents over 35 YEARS of my income !!!

They CHEATED & so did their kids.

NO SYMPATHY HERE.

Aren’t there legal ways he could have gotten the girls into school which look a lot like the illegal way? /s”””

$500,000 would have bought alot of tutors & actually might have had a lasting educational impact on both of those airhead girls.

With no one but a lawyer to write her lines, Loughlin looks foolish.

Lying and Bribery but didn’t know it was wrong...

Should have taken the plea...

Sorry Lori, but your faith in your fame and acting ability is grossly unjustified if you think you are going to cry your way out of a conviction
