WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD APRIL 20, 2019
freerepublic | APRIL 20, 2019 | greeenyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

Thought my asparagus winter-killed. It didn’t. Cut some, ate some...yum.

I know what you mean. Memory is really a valued trait, and frustrating to not be doing well.

Your nights are warmer than ours, but the days are cooler. And our temps are up and down more. Really warm one day and cooler the next. Very interesting.

I got another 5 hrs. Tried to go back to sleep. Didn’t work, so I got up and did a few chores. I’d like to get on a more normal schedule. Bedtime 10 pm and sleep till 6 am. LOL

We seem to be getting to Spring this year. It has been delayed till after the official time for the last several years, so it seems early.

I’m waiting till May 1 for most of my plantings of seeds outdoors.

Thanks for the pics. I love the way pear trees look when in bloom. Nice shot of the bay.

Good idea on planting basil in the planters. I have a large concrete planter that I was just trying to decide what to plant. Basil or some other herb, might just be the thing to do.

Interesting about the parchment paper cover. Exactly why do you do that?

You might want to try some deck corn. A 2x2 ft. square will grow 9 stalks in a container. Marcella told us about it when she was learning to grow stuff.

I tried some one year. It did great and tasted really good.

We haven’t had any asparagus either. We have a bunch of wild asparagus and some that we planted.

Greetings from southern New Hampshire! I am happy to announce that all of the flower beds are clear and ready for planting and/or mulch, and there is a pallet of 15 bags of black mulch, waiting to be used...Lowe’s had Scotts mulch on sale for 5 for $10.

I used the rake and the Cyclone tow-behind leaf shredder to pick up the leaves and debris. Barb found that John Deere 318 tractor on Craig’s List several years ago. It came with the mowing deck, Cyclone, two-stage snow thrower and blessing of all, the Model 44 Loader. Last year, I bought the mowing deck adaptor for the Craftsman and it tows the Cyclone, very nicely.

I still have to clear the front along the road and along the bog filter and put down garden fabric and wood chips, but this is the earliest and most complete spring prep to date!

There is a penalty, however. I have a severe case of poison ivy that sent me to the Urgent Care facility, yesterday. I am starting a two-week steroid regimen, this morning. Hyper Doodle Dandy, I guess.

Our new colony is conducting energetic flight operations. i have to preparre the other hive with one brooder box and feeder as the second colony arrives tomorrow.

Happy Easter, Everyone! HE IS RISEN!

Our temps are moderated by the Pacific Ocean just two miles west of us and Humboldt Bay just a mile west. We usually have fog but that has been changing due to less Sun Spot activity. I’m off to Church for a couple of hours
