Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Star Trek: Discovery co-creator and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman broke down the second season finale in some detail. He also removed any doubt as to where the show is headed:
"We are jumping 950 years into the future for season three.
"We love playing within canon. Its a delight and a privilege. Its fun to explore nooks and crannies of the universe that people havent fully explored yet. That being said, we felt strongly that we wanted to give ourselves an entirely new energy for season three with a whole new set of problems.
Were farther than any Trek show has ever gone. I also had experience working on the [J.J. Abrams] films where we were stuck with canonical problems. We knew how Kirk had died, and we wondered how we could put him in jeopardy to make it feel real. Thats what led us to go with an alternate timeline; suddenly we could tell the story in a very unpredictable way. Thats the same thought process that went into jumping 950 years into the future.
Were now completely free of canon, and we have a whole new universe to explore.
"[The Picard series] going amazingly. We start shooting soon. It will be really different from Discovery in tone, pace, and story. ...Yet, I think people who like The Next Generation will recognize that its made by people who love it equally. It will be really interesting to see how people respond.

Yeah but the current Star Trek universe is so politically correct it makes what’s left of my hair hurt.
Western sci-fi is dead. How much creative originality is really going to go into the 1000th revisitation to a franchise? Last western sci-fi worth watching was Moon.
Are they keeping the current cast and just vaulting everyone 950 years into the future? Or are they essentially ditching everyone, rebooting the entire series as a Next Gen off-shoot, and calling it Season 3?
I was rather impressed by “The Expanse”.
Your mileage may vary.

Is there an in-universe explanation for why its cast looks like a diversity ad?
If there’s one thing more than anything that has driven me away from western media, it’s the political inserts everywhere.
Don’t think I could keep a suspension of disbelief on that one unless they have a super good explanation for the diversity tokens.
Yes, and there’s gonna be a season 4.
The PC route isn’t working out so they’ve resorted to constantly bringing it callbacks to past series.
The left with its grip on the media industry has strangled the creative arts to death.
So ST:D will be going 350 years into the future? I thought it was set 200 years before ST:TOS was supposed to be? So will it be after TOS?
Not 350; 950 years and the cast will be those who were on Discovery and anyone else they want because the future with no humans alive was thwarted. “Control”, the AI, was destroyed and the info it needed to complete itself to destroy all living sentient species never happened.
At the end of the next season they may choose to bring Discovery and its crew back to its own time. ‘Time’ will tell. /s
Western sci-fi is dead.
You are not in the majority on that declaration.
If you read the article, you would have learned that - because it is so far in the future - all the old material is only for historical references and they are not revisiting as you put it. It will be all new themes, plots, and stories - apparently. I suppose it will tied into the upcoming Piccard series which will be followed by a Section 31 series with some sort of DS-9 tie in.
I was rather impressed by The Expanse.
Me too - I had thought it would be a ho-hummer but now I can’t wait for season 3 in June of July
Yeah, don’t you have to stream it from Amazon Prime? Some of us folks have very limited internet, living in the boonies, don’t ya know.
Any guesses as to what today's secret word is?
Besides the stupid lead women who looks angry and started a Klingon war and the Klingons putting their dead on the outside of their ships and the spoor drive and and and then I stopped watching after the 3rd episode because it was so bad. They also all knelled in support of the cop hating pro castro football players.
Truth doesn’t require a consensus. My baseline quality expectation for what I do watch - Japanese media - is higher than anything Hollywood has reached in quite some time.
And that’s just the baseline. I don’t need a crowd to affirm what is plain to my own sense.
I'm not a writer, but will contribute some awesomely creepy and heroic music to whomever steps up to produce it.
Have you watched Legends (2019 w/subs), a 56 part Chinese epic?
