The large, flightless birds, with dagger-like claws, are considered the world’s most dangerous.

“He was doing what he loved,” she said, adding that she did not want to talk anymore.

"The cassowary can slice open any predator or potential threat with a single swift kick. Powerful legs help the cassowary run up to 31 miles per hour (50 kilometers per hour) through the dense forest underbrush.”

“It looks like it was accidental. My understanding is that the gentleman was in the vicinity of the bird and at some point fell. When he fell, he was attacked,”

just came from the bear spray versus gun post:)

Is bear spray effective on cassowaries?

Do you need to put salt on the tail first?

heh heh

Six feet tall and over 100 lbs aren’t uncommon, with a 5 inch long dagger claw. The can run and swim fast. Yikes!

Man stabbed to death by chicken
Knife-wielding cock shock
By Sarah Bee 8 Feb 2011 at 13:15 61

A California man has reportedly suffered a gruesome demise after an accident involving a metal-enhanced cock.

José Luis Ochoa, 35, of Lamont, California, a spectator at a cockfight who had previously been fined for owning or training an animal for fighting, died after being stabbed in the leg in Tulare County, the Grauniad soberly relates.

According to a member of the local sheriff’s department, Ochoa and other men fled when police arrived at the scene of a cockfight. “I have never seen this type of incident,” Sgt Martin King told a Californian newspaper.

Ochoa had been stabbed in the right calf by a knife attached to the leg of one of the roosters. He was declared dead in hospital two hours after sustaining the injury on 30 January.

The southern cassowary is a solitary bird, which pairs only in breeding season, in late winter or spring. The male builds a nest on the ground,[2] a mattress of herbaceous plant material 5 to 10 centimetres (2–4 in) thick and up to 100 centimetres (39 in) wide. This is thick enough to let moisture drain away from the eggs. The male also incubates the eggs and raises the chicks alone. A clutch of three or four eggs are laid measuring 138 by 95 millimetres (5.4 in × 3.7 in). They have a granulated surface and are initially bright pea-green in colour although they fade with age.[2][10]

Cassowaries make a booming call during mating season and hissing and rumblings otherwise. Chicks will make frequent high-pitches whistles to call the male

I have seen some of the fighting chicken knives in the Philippines.

That guy did not stand a chance against a well-trained chicken.

which is more effective, cassowary spray or gun?

I've seen a casserole or two that would stop a grizzly in its tracks.

This happened in Florida.

So you're saying we have alien birds coming to kill the people American birds won't kill.

Imagine putting metal spurs on these cassowaries and watching them fight. Or trying to break up a fight between them.

I was surprised this was in Tulare county, not San Fransisco...
