MONTICELLO, Iowa (AP) — Federal investigators say a small plane crash that killed a 90-year-old pilot near an eastern Iowa airport was likely caused by the pilot’s decision to allow his large dog near the flight controls.

The final National Transportation Safety Board report says investigators don’t know for certain what caused the single-engine aircraft to go down in a cornfield in June 2017 near Monticello Regional Airport. However, the report says, the dog that weighed about 75 pounds likely came in “contact with the flight controls during landing, which resulted in the pilot’s loss of airplane control.”

I have never even heard of a 90 y/o pilot until just now.
It’s certainly possible. This may be someone who had been flying for decades. Perhaps he was one of the lucky ones who may be slowed by arthritis, but never does develop alzheimers.

>>>Not an uncommon sight on the road, often talking on the phone too<<<

I’m assuming the Dog uses Bluetooth or Speaker Phone.

Not “doggone.”

Light sport license requires only a viable drivers license for health certification . He would still have had to pass a test at one time in his life. Maybe 50 years back.

I knew an old guy who had gotten one of the first pilot licenses issued in the State of Kansas. Had it framed and on the wall.

He told me one of his worst flying experiences was agreeing to transport a friends cat on his private plane. The cat had been docile and totally calm anytime he had ever seen it. He said, once the plane left the ground, that cat wanted to run across the ceiling and sides of the plane screaming and scratching to get out. Frenzied mess until he landed and took it out.

If he passed his bi-annual physical exam, and his FAA Checkride, he was good to go. The license is for life; WITH a physical and a checkride every two years. If this has changed, it’s news to me. I’ve been inactive for quite a while.

"that 90 age struck me as being a bit too much"

Perhaps it was the pilot's service dog...seeing eye dog.

I forget exactly how this joke goes, but I’ll give it a try.

With all the computers on planes now, we will soon be moving to a new flight crew; one pilot and a dog.

The pilot is there to feed the dog, and the dog is there to bite the pilot if he touches anything.

It isn’t the age.

I knew someone who at 97 was sharper and smarter than many people at any age.
