Amazing.
My initial reaction was that it must be a hoax, but upon reading the article, it appears that it is real.

Kind of disappointed actually. For some reason, I was sort of expecting them to be rainbow colored or something.

Is that coloration real?
I was talking to one of my boys, who was in California on business last week. He had seen a small dog that appeared to have been tie-dyed.
The colors on the squirrel in the picture are so garish, I couldn’t help but wonder if they were real.

My mini bull terrier goes through the dog door like a shot when there's a squirrel on the deck. Fortunately, his head is as hard and heavy as a bowling ball.

He's fearless, too. A squirrel that big might be a bit offputting, but he's probably up for it.

I just did some research to see if this was someone trying to have us on. It appears that this species actually does have multicolored fur. Now I bet people will be taking lots from the wild to sell as pets. If they tame down well, they could be the next gerbil. Other mammals have bright multicolored fur, such as the mandrill.
I don't know if the nose area is colored fur or skin.
