That’s because, for decades on decades, the lie told by the West to its people and further perpetuated by the Christian Church that Islam is a younger version of Christianity and that Mohammad is a prophet on the same level as Christ.
Not even 911 could dispel that lie.
That schools no longer teach history does not help. Even in the 40-60s grade schools skipped over most of the period from 620-1400Ad with just some highlights here and there but never gave the root cause of Islam - the overwhelming impression left was just a bunch of people fighting over cities and so on.
The truth or any shades of it ever were permitted to enter the classroom so as not to tarnish the image of the peaceful muslim just trying to eek out a living under harsh conditions ...
Most now believe there are good and bad muslims with those really bad ones called fundamentalists live in out of the way places in foreign lands were American soldiers should not be sent to fight and die. American muslims are known to be peaceful like their brethren in the middle east and in the name of sacred diversity should be elected to high political positions, perhaps one day to the presidency.

The problem is ~~ they worked with what they knew about religion.
In their contemplation they had never anticipated a constitution with a religious beard called Islam.
Islam is a competing consitution seeking to supplant the hosts constitution while it hides behind religion.
Islam is an invasive occupying enemy force and needs to be dealt with at that level.
Worst part? Caliphate is the end goal.
