Officials with the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve near Lancaster never thought they'd have to warn people not to land a helicopter in the middle of the fields -- that is, until one actually did.
"We never thought it would be explicitly necessary to state that it is illegal to land a helicopter in the middle of the fields," the post stated. "We were wrong." Apparently, a couple landed the helicopter in the field and began hiking off a nearby trail.
The hike didn't last long however, as law enforcement immediately intervened, according to post. They tried to contact the couple, who promptly ran back to the helicopter and flew away.
Like other parts of California, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Bloom has experienced a super bloom of wildflowers in the past few weeks due to the region's wet winter.
That super bloom has created problems in some areas, most notably at Lake Elsinore's Walker Canyon, where city officials had to implement traffic and parking restrictions on weekends in order to control what was described as "Disneyland-size" crowds.
So far, the Antelope Valley poppy fields haven't been inundated with the same overwhelming throngs of visitors as Lake Elsinore, though it too has seen large crowds.
At one point this past Saturday, the parking lot had to be closed temporarily due to being completely full.

Well of course.
All of this was a budding disaster.

Dummies coulda used a drone...
With all the rain, it should be a good season. But it is best to go in a week day, if you can.
I’d like to see someone land a chopper in the ‘Poopy Fields’ of San Francisco, LOL!
The sh#t would REALLY hit the fan, there! ;)
Paraquat should solve the problem with the poppy fields.
NOT drug poppies.
California orange poppies.
When they have this kind of spectacular bloom, it is amazing.
Used to ride horseback in Spenceville Wildlife Preserve near Beale AFB. In the NE corner of that preserve, there is a hill that is heavily populated with poppies. Spectacular, s they cascade from above the old road/trail & down he hill to the valley below.
Are these the same type of poppies that heroin is made from?
No.
These poppies are special - instead of attracting butterflies - they attract helicopters - must be a California thing
I guess folks who own private helicopters can be as obnoxious as some folks with their fancy cars.
There was a BMW in the store parking lot. Parked across THREE spots at an angle. PLUS two traffic cones! And this from a place where Ferraris are seen every day, and a Lamborghini is not uncommon.
During the summer on Sunday mornings the Lamborghini’s get together for breakfast and then a drive. Fun to go check them out - anywhere from 10 to 20 of them - but there they do park in a far corner - and have the section roped off and with a guard.
You can get close to the cars - just don’t touch. Fun stuff.
Chopper blades among the blooms......wonderful!
So unfair. They also get poed when we land the chopper on the 405 exits too. What is this, middle class privilege??? Pass the grey poupon.
Darn, I was just towing the MD-500 outta the hangar, too....
