By February, the snow made many neighborhoods here feel subterranean.
Twenty-foot walls of white, corniced by the wind, leaned over the plowed roads. Residents worked feverishly to keep the snow from swallowing their homes. They dug tunnels and narrow passageways to the street, opened portals to get light through second-story windows, shoveled dangerous weight off their roofs. inRead invented by Teads ADVERTISEMENT
Unoccupied homes were so buried that a child might unknowingly sled down one. On still nights, when the wind stopped and the plows had passed, the silence was absolute. Only the streetlights and spirals of smoke from unseen chimneys suggested human life.
This years record-setting February and continued storms have reconnected residents to a historic rite of passage in Californias highest town, a place that largely came to be because of its monumental snowfall.

Let me guess, this is caused by man-made global warming too?
Global cooling is so much worse for humanity than global warming.
We should all burn extra fossil fuels today.
Must be the result of global warming.
Get some tires early for the April 22 erf day festival. Nothin’ says lovin’ like burnin’ a tire to celebrate.
Always impressed by the pictures of the stumps of the Trees cut by Donner party 1846 - 1847
Love it there! Headed down with family later this week, driving from Seattle to Palm Desert via HWY395 and the Sierras. I ride dirt bikes in the area a couple times per year with the crazy Cali riders.
Going back in Mid May to ski and dirt bike, have never skied Mammoth.
I heard that dam (largest earthen dam in the USA) up above Sacramento still is in danger of breaking.
They say when it gets warmer there are going to be major worries about it, again.
You obviously dont know the science behind how global warming can ACTUALLY lead to global cooling in some instances.
I’ll send you the equation later.
Maybe they can now stop complaining about their dang drought.
There was a video done by Ken Burns’s brother, Ric Burns, about the Donner Party and at the end they show a mounted cowboy reaching up to a stump from a tree cut down by the Donner party. Very impressive film. It used to be on YouTube, but just looking I can’t find it there. Used to show it to my 7th grade history class before Christmas break to get them into the mood for snow and to teach them how tough people had to be in the past just to survive. (And I don’t know how tough the people eaten were, the film didn’t get into that!)
At one point a rescue mission arrived but it was too deep for the children to be able to leave, so one mother had to leave her two-year old son in the charge of her eight-year old daughter. The girl and boy both survived to be evacuated by the next rescue party. Kids had to grow up fast back in the day.
Is that like an AlGorerithm?
LOL!
Never heard that one :)
Just a foretaste of the coming ice age.
That’s absolute B.S. some idiot youtubers are pushing. There is water going down the new spillway as the water in lake Orville is above the bottom of the spillway gates. The spillway gates are not like submarine hatches and are not meant to be 100% watertight. The water that can be seen is just bleedby. The dam is fine.
Tahoe started overflowing the weir and filling the Truckee two years ago.
It will be a hearty flow this year too.
According to many, this year is the wake up call and next year panic will set in.
Like I said before. When the big lake Superior and the small lakes, Michigan, Huron etc, freeze over for two or three years in a row, then its on for sure.
I just heard that the first b-ball bracket pool started at a Staten Island bar in 1977. Know anything about that?
Looks normal ‘currently’. Plenty of rocks sticking up by the Virginia St bridge. Neighbor’s headed to Pyramid Lake to do some ladder fishing today. Pyramid is filling up nicely. Now if we could get Walker Lake to fill up and Lahontan that would be nice. :-)
