MySpace reportedly loses 50 million songs uploaded over 12 years (Those MP3s of your band? Oops!)

No more partying like it's 2003-2015 on the social network that was once the biggest site in the US.

MySpace may have lost your digital memories in a server migration.

"As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from Myspace," it said in a note at the top of the site.

"We apologize for the inconvenience. If you would like more information, please contact our Data Protection Officer at DPO@myspace.com."

Andy Baio, one of the people behind Kickstarter, tweeted that it could mean millions of songs uploaded between the site's Aug. 1, 2003 launch and 2015 are gone for good.

"Myspace accidentally lost all the music uploaded from its first 12 years in a server migration, losing over 50 million songs from 14 million artists," he wrote Sunday.

"I'm deeply skeptical this was an accident. Flagrant incompetence may be bad PR, but it still sounds better than 'we can't be bothered with the effort and cost of migrating and hosting 50 million old MP3s,' " Baio noted.
MySpace didn't immediately respond to a request for further comment.

It might seem like a dim and distant memory now, but MySpace was an essential springboard for musicians like Arctic Monkeys in 2005 and the most popular site in the US in 2006. It was got a makeover back in 2013, when it was refurbished and rebranded as a cool place to share music and video.

My guess is there are some political sensitive photos, videos etc from Democrat Party candidates that were “lost” during this episode.

This (among other good reasons) is why you do not trust online storage for important data.

Myspace turned into a thug breeding ground 20 years ago. Facebook only exists because middle agers like me are involuntarily stuck because their parents will not communicate in any other way. Us GenXrs despise it and I am sure the young kids are long gone.

MySpace music pages haven’t worked for me for the last 10 years!!! Any time I go to one and click the play button, nothing happens.

I’ve never seen a website rise to high and fall so hard as MySpace. Hell, even ebay is still mildly usable.

What’s that old saying about backing up?

If you are backing up to take a selfie by the Grand Canyon, oops.

Even more bizarre is that this site still exists.... https://www.aol.com/

It's owned by Verizon now. A couple of years ago Verizon shut down their email services and transitioned those customers over to AOL.

Unfathomable that they did a server migration without confirming backups of all the data first. Unconscionable stupidity.

"Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity."

Maybe, but in this case, I smell malice. Specifically, a really big pay-off. Like something in those archives was deeply embarrassing to one of the Democrat presidential hopefuls.

This is the reason I never store any files on a web site.

I didn’t know MySpace still existed.

Actually, they rebranded themselves as a site where bands could showcase their music.

So, they've now f**ked up the last remaining thing they were good for.
