'Murder by Death' with Elsa Lanchester, Peter Sellers, David Niven & Maggie Smith

Murder By Death was a spoof of "whodunnit" films, in which the world's most famous detectives were invited to a remote house for a weekend and a murder. This they had to solve in order to win a million dollars. The cast included Peter Sellers as Sydney Wang (aka Charlie Chan); James Coco as Milo Perrier (aka Hercule Poirot); David Niven and Maggie Smith as Nick and Nora Charleston (aka The Thin Man and his wife); Peter Falk doing a Humphrey Bogart impersonation as Sam Diamond (aka The Maltese Falcon's Sam Spade); and Elsa as Jessica Marbles (aka Agatha Christie's Miss Marple).

The farcical plot involves disappearing rooms, a blind butler (played by Alec Guinness), a deaf mute cook (played by Nancy walker), with the host (played by Truman Capote) observing the goings-on from inside a moose head on the wall.

I saw this movie as a youngster at the theatre in 1976 with my brother and our parents, and my three cousins and their parents.

Our parents were all laughing so hard at how the detectives they grew up knowing were being parodied, the usher came over with his flashlight and asked our parents to please keep it down. :)

Reminded me more of “Cheap Detective” in that it gathered so many fictional sleuths together.

Great line! Truman Capote would have been a grammar cop here.

It was great! I loved how Sam (Peter Falk) treated his "dame".😎 Sellers turned in his usual Rembrandt.

One of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. I thought of it the other night when I watched “Young Frankenstein”...another funny one.

“”Hilarious scene with blind butler Alec Guiness yelling at deaf, mute maid Nancy Walker.””

The best scene and one person wasn’t even in the room as I recall. It’s been a long time.

Along with “build a fire in the bedroom”......

David Niven may come across the screen as not a very tough fellow.

But, he was a Major in the Commandos during WW2.
