In all fairness, these breeds are used to this. There must of been an underlying issue that wasn’t caught.
Life isn’t 100% safe and happy happy joy joy!
Lets all rant and wail and rend our sack cloth cloths and cover our head in ashes!
We must stop any practice, hobby, sport or activity that might cause harm or has any risk of injury or death!
And we wonder why the more robust barbarians are hammering at our gates and slavering with glee at the expected sack of our cities.
That’s okay by me, at least for this brutal race.
The doggies don’t get a choice as to whether to participate in the misery.

The Iditarod is commemorating a desperate rescue attempt that was only undertaken because thousands of people stranded in Nome would die without medicine. Nobody in their right mind would have done that trek otherwise.
There must be other ways to recognize that achievement without nearly recreating it each year, without all the dangers that went with the original emergency.
As far as other pieces of Americana going away, I would compare this to recreating of the a dozen trail rides that precede the launch of the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show each year. That event uses animals too, horses to be specific, on a series of nearly month-long journeys from various parts of Texas.
One difference is that the horses are not run hard in extreme conditions. They don't even work as hard as horses did on the original trail rides that brought the cattle in. Still, it's getting more difficult to organize these rides as they rely more and more on busy highways and roads.

Too many have died and too many injured during the race. And there are no records on how many dogs have died in training.......
Run and survive or fight and survive, the Iditarod is no different than dog fighting, just without the blood.

These dogs are bred to run and are not being coerced in any way. I suspect many more dogs die due to owner neglect in the lower 48 than die from dogsledding.
That being said I would be interested in the opinions of his fellow mushers.

It’s sad that she died but sled dogs live for this, they’re bred to run distance as anyone who’s ever had a Husky or Malamute can attest. She had five years of doing what she loved to do, it was in her blood. Attacking the sledder is not productive.

The dog died at a vet clinic in Anchorage - 2 days after the race ended.

I care MORE about human babies! Being outraged at unnecessary animal cruelty does not make one even a bit less Conservative. It is the Pol’s and the Media that seek to divide us based upon carefully chosen issues. I am conservative to the Core, and Abortion horrifies me.

In 2018 330 dogs were pulled out of the race due to injuries, illness or exhaustion...........
Pointers are bred to hunt but they're not driven to hunt day after day after day until they drop from exhaustion.
You want to have sled dog races then I'm fine with that as long as you don't force them to run 1,000 miles for two weeks straight.........
For what it's worth, the requirement of the Iditarod is that you can have a max of only 16 dogs but have to finish with only five......
So what does that tell you about the teams that only ended up with 5, 6, 8 or 10 dogs? What happened to those that were dropped since you claim they were bred to run?????
This is a race that brutalizes dogs, not the riders and should be banned..........
No doubt the Alaskan dog breeds are used to pulling sleds. I have no beef with that at all as they are performing valuable work and the dogs seem to like the work as well (they actually fight over the privilege of being harnessed up in a team). It’s the racing part of it that seems unnecessary as the sprit of competition between the men makes them drive their dogs all the harder, much more than they normally would if they were just delivering supplies on a routine run. It’s that part of it that seems unfair (to the dogs) to me. It seems that the dogs are being made to suffer unnecessarily so some man can win a trophy.
Given the quality of the dreck that passes for ‘TV shows’ nowadays, I’d ban them as a threat to the average American’s IQ. Maybe some of them will shake the cultural fog out of their heads and think for themselves for once.
