Rebecca Alexanders worst experience dining while large happened just after she nailed a promotion at a nonprofit organization.
She took her staff, and her new boss, to lunch at a promising downtown restaurant in Portland, Ore., where she lives. As the hostess led the group to a booth, Ms. Alexander, a 31-year-old who wears a size 30, knew in an instant there was no way she was going to squeeze into it.
I remember having this out-of-body experience, she said. I watched myself sit down and try to get in even though I knew the space was too small, because I so needed it to fit. Defeated, she asked for a table. The hostess told her there would be a half-hour wait.
The cherry on top was that I got to be the reason we had to stand around for 30 minutes, she said.
For people who identify as large, plus-size or fat, dining out can be a social and physical minefield. Chairs with arms or impossibly small seats leave marks and bruises. Meals are spent in pain, or filled with worry that a flimsy chair might collapse.

Only chinese food I like is General Tso chicken and chicken on a stick.
Its not a chronic hunger disorder.
Its because you have a crap diet and you train yourself to continue to eat crap food high sugar high carb which keeps you hungry and packs on the pounds.
its your stupid diet.
and if you believed government about having carbs make up most of your diet thats your problem right there. The same diet advice given to farmers to bulk up their meat animals, is the same diet advice they gave to humans to supposedly keep us slim. Nope, high carb fattens you up. And its worse the more sedentary you are, and worse the older you are, and worse if you’re female.
*** Kinda makes you wonder...where do the morbidly obese go when they want to go out to eat? Probably the all you can eat smorgasbords. ***
I actually wondered about when their food reaches the other end. I had a patient, who would sometimes have a real mess when using public restroom facilities (like at our clinic).
Migraine on a stick.
Most places are out for me, learning the hard way being miserable after chowing down.
Mom and pop places, Marco’s Pizza, and some things from the chains are ok.
changing what you eat can change yoyr gut bacteria, and taking good bacreria that helps you eat healthier foods can be taken as well. spices and peppers and such can kill off bad bacteria that you dont want helping influence your cravings.
theres nothing chronic or permanent about it, you can nowadays easily change your gut bacteria, but you cant expect it to work if you dont change what you eat. otherwise its just going to eventually revert back.
I have problems fitting into booths but it’s because I’m really tall. Nobody cares about me! lol... Drive my car with my knees against the dash.
Excellent on your weight loss.
Thanks for posting the TED talks.
I have enjoyed some of those over the years.
I have to stay on top of things myself. I am pre-diabetic and I work hard to keep from getting full blown diabetes. I never eat birthday cake at the office, no pizza, etc. My doctor was impressed that I kept the my blood sugar in check and even lost a few pounds. I asked him what most of his patients did when they received my diagnosis. He said they don’t do anything and ask for stronger diabetic drugs.
Mass market restaurants (no pun intended) are in an arms race with regard to portions. If they decided to serve normal portions it would indeed be a suicide mission on their part.
Time to maybe lose weight?
“Dining while Large”
HAHAHAHAHAHA, for Christ sakes, they are FAT, just say it.
Last time I was in a Friday’s, the food was okay, but the atmosphere was ... odd, and our waiter was a cross between Curly of the Three Stooges and Zippy the Pinhead. Sounded like it too.
It was surreal.
These days, I prefer a stop at Chili’s, or maybe Twin Peaks...
:P
I could get her to normal weight. I might have to live with her for the first couple weeks. Its not hard.
Only drink:water. No flavorings.
Fast every day from 9 pm to 12 pm.
Eat one serving of animal protein 3x a day. If she is still hungry, the first week she can have 2 servings of animal protein. After the protein she can have veggies cooked in oil or butter, raw veggies, and one potato (or other starchy root veg) per meal. She must have potatoes every day of some kind (white or sweet) to feed her gut bugs.
There would be some vitamin and probiotic supplements, maybe kimchi or other seasonings. Salt and pepper, vinegar or lemon juice, olive, coconut, sesame oil, butter.
Believe me, this for a month and she would have lost her cravings for baked goods and desserts. Then she could keep this up for a year, then add in more seeds, nuts, beans, and even 1 c fresh fruit a day.
It would work.
ever notice that some people are Always eating?
Yes.
I could "identify" as my once healthy, slim self, but I'm NOT.
I'm FAT.
There, I said it, and my health suffers because of it.
Would it hurt my feelings if a child said "that guy is fat"?
Not really, because it's true.
I'm built exactly like my dad.
He was slim once.
But just like my dad, I carry my weight around my belly.
The worst phenotype.
He told me that he was in an elevator and a little girl told him: "I like your tummy!"
Did my dad go and cry?
Nope. He said:"thank you!"
I am glad you took the constructive route.
Please keep it up.
I had a 92 last year but I read that many with that number go on to get diabetes and I have been pressing my luck forever.
I go for the yearly test again this week.
Once you are pre diabetic can you get back to non pre diabetic?
Perhaps the cosmos is trying to tell them something.
Shocked it took 8 posts.
Hey, fat shamers...
I have job where I am physically active and I work out at a gym 3 or 4 times a week.
I eat, on average, about 1600 calories a day.
I am 6’ tall and 290.
Sometimes being overweight ISN’T your fault. Just sayin’.
