The Constitution left voting privileges up to the states. What age, sex, or race allowed to vote was a decision each state was free to legislative.
I recall the argument in favor of allowing eighteen year olds to vote in Federal Elections. The arguments had merit and the nation ratified the 26th Amendment.
Section 1
The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.
Section 2
The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
The amendment is not the law. Section 1 is not legislation. Section 2 adds the congressional legislative power that was lacking.
Now discussions are about sixteen year olds voting in Federal Elections and the arguments lack merit mainly of what I have learned about teenagers’ mental development.
What I learned that causes me to disapprove of the notion of sixteen year olds voting was a video from the World Economic Forum answering the question, “Why Are Teenagers Rude?”
I won’t share my reasoning at this time but I’ll share the link so you can form your own opinion of sixteen year olds voting in Federal Elections.
Why Teenagers Seem Rude and Selfish
I posted this because of the way Congress has turned their legislative responsibilities over to the agencies engineers and scientist.
What is the science behind mental development, voting, and the acceptance of responsibility?
If they are mature enough to vote in elections, then they are mature enough to buy guns AND serve in the military.
No, and furthermore, no one who has paid net negative in terms of taxes vs benefits over their lifetimes should either.
Absolutely not. The human brain is not fully developed at age 16, and from what I’ve seen of 16 year olds, they are not even responsible enough to do their homework let alone help determine our legislators and laws.
I have a seventeen year old female of above average intelligence in my home (mother rents my upstairs). I can prove that such a mind is far too immature to be voting. The selfishness quotient alone should disqualify. But the ‘tumultuous emotions rule her days’ says even more. And the seventeen thru nineteen year old males who lurk about prove crotch rules all at that age.
Their goals are almost accomplished.
17. Get Control of the Schools. Use them as transmission belts for Socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the Party line in textbooks.
20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policy-making positions.
21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. Eliminate all good sculptures from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.
23. Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.
24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down culture standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio and TV.
26. Present homo-sexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural, healthy.”
27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a “religious crutch.”
28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.” (A.C.L.U. lawyers accomplished this goal in a very short 4 years from publication of the book “The Naked Communist.”)
29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a world-wide basis. (In 2012, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsberg and A.C.L.U. member said exactly this while visiting Cairo, Egypt.)
30. Discredit the American founding fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the “common man.”
31. Belittle all forms of American culture, and discourage the teaching of American history on the grounds that it was only a minor part of “the big picture.” Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture, education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.
36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.
37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business. (Then move the jobs overseas, to stifle the American economy. Import goods from other countries, to create an imbalance of trade.)
40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.
41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influences of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of the parents.
Communist goals to take over America.
42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use “united force” to solve economic, political or social problems. (Occupy Wall Street is being organized by the Communist Party.)
45. Repeal the Connally Reservation so the U.S. cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction over nations and individuals alike
Note that one of the very few constitutionally express powers that the states have actually given the feds to make domestic policy is to run the US Mail Service (1.8.7).

Since most sixteen year olds probably text each other like everybody else does and don’t use mail, no great hurry for sixteen year olds to vote in federal elections imo.
Otherwise, sixteen year old federal voters would be helping to unconstitutionally expand the already unconstitutionally big federal governments power like older voters have been doing.
You and I probably heard of this Communist manifesto way back by the nineteen seventies (or earlier in my case). And yet the Amerixcan sheeple are now living the steps, all 41 of them, without a clue to why the Republic is in its death throes.

No. While sixteen year-olds may be less distanced from civics lessons, the lessons they now get are partisan, socialist hooey. Let them spend some time on their own in the real world, confirming for themselves that stereotypes exist for a reason.
I think the reason saloons were closed on election day was to cut down on people voting demoKkkrat. You have to be stupid or very drunk to vote demokkkrat.
If you are not self supporting, and are listed as somebody else’s dependent, then you should not be eligible to vote.
That includes welfare recipients.

If 17 you needed 1 parent signature, if, 16 then you needed both.

The question of a person's mental development caused my concern.
Pelosi’s acceptance of six-teen year olds voting in Federal Elections alarmed me. My alarm was the result of learning that Pelosi took her position based on political gain and not on the merits of the issue.
I want my representative to take decisions based on merit not political gain alone. This almost demands that discussions precede decisions.
