Should Sixteen Year Olds Vote In Federal Elections?

Should Sixteen Year Olds Vote In Federal Elections?

The Constitution left voting privileges up to the states. What age, sex, or race allowed to vote was a decision each state was free to legislative.

I recall the argument in favor of allowing eighteen year olds to vote in Federal Elections. The arguments had merit and the nation ratified the 26th Amendment.

Section 1

The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.

Section 2

The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

The amendment is not the law. Section 1 is not legislation. Section 2 adds the congressional legislative power that was lacking.

Now discussions are about sixteen year olds voting in Federal Elections and the arguments lack merit mainly of what I have learned about teenagers’ mental development.

What I learned that causes me to disapprove of the notion of sixteen year olds voting was a video from the World Economic Forum answering the question, “Why Are Teenagers Rude?”

I won’t share my reasoning at this time but I’ll share the link so you can form your own opinion of sixteen year olds voting in Federal Elections.

Why Teenagers Seem Rude and Selfish

I posted this because of the way Congress has turned their legislative responsibilities over to the agencies engineers and scientist.

What is the science behind mental development, voting, and the acceptance of responsibility?

If they’re not only enough to enlist, smoke, drink, or get a concealed carry permit, they’re not old enough to vote.

Well, Nancy? Are they?

Why stop at 16? Let’s say as soon as you can read, you can vote... 8? Heck, most 8 year olds are just as bright as the average Democrat voter... oh, wait, that’s the plan.

I ran for my HS class president in 1971.

There were three others.

1. The perennial class president that had basically been in for years.

2. A nerdy girl.

3. A guitar playing surfer dude hippy type.

The class had a auditorium speech session.

We all gave our speeches, each lasting about 10 minutes.

Except the surfer dude, who was last, just stood up, grinned like a possum, waved and said, “Ya’ll all vote for me!” and sat down.

He won by a landslide..........................

No one should be voting who is not self-supporting.

So, that would mean no one below the age of consent, and for that matter, no one who is below the usual college age.

Based on that, 22 minimum. By that time you’re typically out of college, out of your first term in the military, and out of your parents home (at least for the first time...)

Voting age should be 21, just as is being required to purchase tobacco products. I’ve long held that most folks aren’t mature enough to make good decisions at 18 to allow them to vote, at 16 it is worse, but then they will like the Dem’s bribe of offering ‘free stuff’ and vote them in.

No. Dumb question

A no answer proves it was a smart question.

Quite frankly, I would like to see the voting age tied to the same age someone can purchase a firearm....Tit for tat.

When I was 16 I cared nothing about anything but music, getting girls to go out with me, and my acne. My vote at 16 wouldn’t have contributed *anything* worthwhile to this country.

Hell....no...21 should be minimum voting age and even that’s a stretch....a voter needs to have some life experience before making such decisions of consequence...

They need to lower the voting age to about 6, maybe 5.

The demoKKKrats would love that:

"Hey boys and girls, want some candy? Just get in the car and we will drive you to the polls to vote for our nice candidates who are going to give you lot's of free stuff.

Hey, you can trust us. And after you vote, we'll take you for pizza. Do you like pizza? We know this great pizza place called Ping Pong Pizza. Ever heard of it?"

“No, and 21 should be the minimum voting age.”
Okay, but unless you serve in the armed forces you can.

No, and neither should 18 year olds and neither should anyone who has no stake in the survival of our country.

I think not only should you have to prove you’re a citizen to vote

but you should have to pass a rudimentary test Akin to the test that immigrants have to pass to get citizenship in order to vote and get a minimum score of passing

For example who is the president of the United States the vice president what is the constitution what is the bill of rights so wanted so forth
