The 17-year-old junior, who was not identified, reportedly asked her teacher at Lake Mary High School near Orlando if she could be excused to use the restroom around 7:45 a.m. About five minutes later, the teacher said she heard a gunshot come from the auditorium.
The school was briefly placed on a lockdown which has since been lifted, and students were allowed to go home for the day after news of the incident spread, WESH reported.
Seminole County Sheriff Dennis Lemma said during a press conference that there were no staff or students in the auditorium when the shooting took place. After hearing the gunshot, the school's nurse attempted to revive the young woman. It's not known how the student got access to the handgun.
Victims advocates have reportedly notified the girl's father, and are attempting to get in contact with her mother, who lives outside the state of Florida.
Now, investigators are trying to find out how she was able to obtain the gun and bring it into the school.
Lemma highlighted the community's mental health resources and encouraged those experiencing depressive or suicidal thoughts to get in touch.

Bingo.
Divorce is a killer.
How can most schools keep watch so there can’t be any guns brought in? Campuses are large and spread out. Every department has it’s own building with several doors. Offices are in one building. Auditorium in another. Gym in another. English in another. Math in another. Library in another. Tech in another, etc. Guns, drugs, non-students and poodles can all come and go with ease.
If a person is determined to commit suicide, they will by any means possible. If not a gun, then jumping out a window. Oooh, gotta ban windows!
Are we certain it was really a girl and not a transgender “girl”. Suicide by gunshot wound is more typically a male type of suicide. I think girls do more pills rather than use a gun. I could be wrong but I’d like to know more about this person. Also, prayers for the family. Only 17 and life is too much. That’s a tragedy.
Okay, let's try it this way.
If Netflix were going to make a movie about a girl at the edge of seventeen, living with her father, suddenly committing suicide at 7:50am by herself in the school auditorium...what would be her motive today?
That's gotta be one of the weirdest replies yet.
I think I might smell a rat myself. When I read that sentence, I immediately began to wonder whether dear old Dad might have been abusing the girl. Mom not only isn’t in the home. She’s not even in the state! How severe would the girl’s life have to be, to push her to this extreme?
“that sentence, I immediately began to wonder whether dear old Dad might have been abusing the girl. “
Good lord, why on earth would your mind even go there?
.
RIP
Because something pretty heinous drove darlin’ to off herself; and Mom has taken a powder to another state. This would seem to indicate she did not WANT the daughter with her when she departed; and left her to Dad’s tender mercies. The reports of abusive male parental units are fairly common.
Being 17 must be really rough
Gallows humor comes with a free side of irony.
Yet stranger things have been reported. Funny how often we hear stories of “multiple gun shots to the head” ruled a suicide.
It’s a given that she will have been on psych meds.
Troubled girl....ban auditoriums
As a father who is raising 4 kids by himself because their mother wanted to whore around 2,000 miles away as well as having one son going to Lake Mary High School and knows a friend of the deceased (Who knew her since second grade), let me just say your are a complete idiot and a huge A-hole to assume all that.
“After all the school shootings theres still nothing in place to make sure no one brings a gun into the school.”
Those no gun zone signs are all that’s used to prevent guns from being brought on campus. Signs are expected to keep drugs out too.
Pure fantasy.
