De Blasio tells New Yorkers what they can flush down the toilet
NY Post ^ | March 12, 2019 | Julia Marsh

Mayor Bill de Blasio has taken the concept of a Nanny State to a whole new level — instructing New Yorkers about what they can and cannot flush down their toilets.

“New York City: There are only FOUR things that should go in your toilet,” the mayor’s office tweeted from its official account Tuesday.

As a former certified sewer plant operator in the state of New York, I have to agree with the mayor.

And I agree with you. Jeez, this is just common sense.

I wonder if he has considered educating the populace instead of threatening and demeaning them. Idk, just a sort of different approach. Won’t make him look so much like he thinks his government even controls your toilet.

Next will be honey buckets outside the door like China uses for collecting fertilizer.

Soory I agree, but so many on FreeRepublic feel compelled to condemn good ideas even when expressed by idiots like Di Blasio, merely when they are expressed by folks like him.

It’s the opposite of “don’t kill the messenger”, but instead always kill the messaege ONLY because of the messenger. It’s a knee-jerk close minded attitude just like we always accuse the Left of.

Everyone pays muncipal taxes, and sewage costs are just one of the things our local taxes pay for. Anything that makes those costs less is a good thing, no matter who mentions it.

It certainly was no “nanny state” who told me not to put my cigarette butts in the toilet, at our country house that had a septic tank (back when I smoked). It was my plumber. He explained the different ways the cigarettes, particularly the filters (they do not easily biodegrade and they float, so they don’t exactly “flush” well), can foul up the operations of the septic system. I guess if I had heard it from Di Blasio I was supposed to - stupidly - reject the advice.

Everyone reacts and too many replace thiking with reactions.

For the most part, sewers are a gravity flow system. They all have a gentle down slope leading to either pumps or treatment facilities.

My understanding is that when the sewer systems were designed and installed many decades ago, they took into account the average amount of water in each flush when calculating the down slope. Thus, this was the amount of water needed per flush to get waste from point “A” to point “B”.

Now, via legislation, we have toilets that use a fraction of the amount of water of older toilets with no change to the sewage down slope. The result that there is not enough hydraulic energy to move the waste from point “A” to point “B”.

I kinda believe it ‘casue people flushing “problem items” is not new issue. Disposable diapers have been around since the 60’s. Cooking grease has been going down the toilet since there have been toilets. We aren’t doing anything differently today than what was being done in past decades. It’s only with the advent of low flush toilets that are having issues.

The law of unintended consequences strikes again.

I wouldn’t do that-—I let it harden, put it in a plastic bag and throw into the rubbish.

I keep a metal coffee can for the melted fat.
My last rented house the entire drain system was clogged with disposable wipes.

Still barging you garbage out into Long Island Sound and dumping, de Blaisio?

Last I heard there was a gigantic white jelly-like blob covering miles and miles of the bottom - dead bottom, no life. Great for the environment right?

It’s not just the low flush toilets. It’s less and less money being budgeted to maintain, repair, upgrade sewet systems. And with the costs associated with trash removal going up, some folks use their toilets for that purpose.

Don’t the alligators and the giant rats living in the NYC sewer system eat all the other stuff?

Who speaks for THEM? *SNORT*

My last rented house the entire drain system was clogged with disposable wipes.

Knew someone years ago that was building a house in the country. The slab was laid with the plumbing pipes exposed, and a crew came in the lay down the asphalt driveway.

Once the work was complete there was some leftover asphalt, still hot and liquid. One of the rocket scientists decided to dump it down one of the house's drain lines. Oops.

Yup...what mewzilla said. Good point, seems all the money goes to salaries and pensions, with little or nothing going to infrastructure repair or upgrades. It’s just not sustainable the way it’s being managed.

How soon before the government will be mandating thinner toilet paper and setting standards for how much paper can be used per flush? Will laxatives and high fiber foods also be banned? I used to tell my economics students that if we expect the government to right every wrong and wipe every tear, do not be surprised when the government soon is dictating the right way to wipe your rear.
