Vote on Oregon’s Controversial Forced Opioid Tapering Expected This Week
National Pain Report ^ | 3/13/2019 | Ed Coghlan

Posted on 03/13/2019 9:02:23 AM PDT by GailA

On Thursday (March 14th), the Oregon Health Authority is going to vote on a proposal that just about everyone who treats chronic pain thinks is a bad idea.

Essentially, the proposal would force Oregon Medicaid patients off opioid medications without their consent.

This vote is happening despite intense criticism aimed at the agency from over 100 leaders in pain medicine, addiction and public health who raised their concern in a letter that was sent to the Oregon Health Authority. It said that the risks of involuntary tapering and the importance of facilitating access of medications to people who need them should be at the center of the debate.

“I predict that the suicide rate will increase dramatically.”

That’s exactly what the fascists in the Oregon state government want.

They have legal physician assisted suicide there too.

They won’t deprive animals of pain relievers, but they will deprive the elderly humans & force them to live/die in pain.

I hate articles like this. They issue a dire warning about legislation, yet don’t have the guts to state the bill number so we can look it up.

No legislation - it’s administrative: https://www.oregon.gov/oha/ERD/Pages/March-2019-OR-Health-Evidence-Review-Commission-Meeting.aspx

That HIPPA form you signed is being shopped, they caught a few on Celebs. But the common person’s info is wide open. Then they wonder why patients like me REFUSE to use their Portals. But want printed copies of reports.

Suicides and Heart Attacks are up, younger Veterans are the higher suicide rate now, that's a reverse from it being Senior Veterans. In the last week 5 people have had Heart Attacks from untreated Pain or committed Suicide.

As a Cardio patient it scares the H out of me. Pain shoots up the BP into Heart Attack zone quickly. Don't treat the high level pain, and you could be the next victim of Government playing Doctor.

They can't run the CDC, DEA, FDA, or VA.

How would you like to go through Major surgery only to get Tylenol/Ibuprofen combo for pain relief? Ibuprofen is a bleeding agent like aspirin is or any other blood thinner.

I hate the nanny state as much as anyone, but there is a need for sane regulation. Not to mention better choices for patients when it comes to severe chronic pain management. Opiods are a lousy option for long-term use.

Those Osteoarthritis drugs RUINED my GI tract. My only other option is a low dose 5 mg Norco 4 times a day which makes the pain tolerable, doesn’t get rid of it, just lowers it. Then the Predisone, Steroid shots, Cortisone shots got the Spine and Bones. Osteoporosis drugs are AFib ER trips for me. And No I don’t want your BONE CANCER causing Forteo.

Every joint and muscle in my body was screaming this morning. I’m 70 I’ve not had a pain free breath in 40 yrs since I popped the first 2 T 11/12 disc and caused a annular tear. Now whole spine is Degenerative. Because of FDA approved drugs.

I’d wish Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis on them, and all react to the drugs for them. Then start the falls that break hips, backs, and cause concussions. Plus EVERY SURGERY IS BOTCHED.

All this FAKE Crisis was started to cover up CIA drug running. And states wanting reimbursement for the NARCAN they use on OD’d addicts. Less than 1% become addicted to Legal Opioids used correctly. Most OD’s a a combo of other drugs with a Illicit drug. Look up Tom Petty’s and Michael Jackson’s Tox Reports. Even Elvis and Hank Williams Sr were victims of Bad Doctors. Hank Sr was being scripted Hose pain pills.

I don’t mind spending money on the Babies as they are innocent victims of IDIOT mothers. Doctors should be required to report Addict mothers and then force them to go clean.

Same here, but Tennessee, niece has Lymes, Lupus, Liver, Kidney, Lung issues, and 2 botched knee surgeries you can see thru her ligaments. Even the brace doesn’t help balance or pain. Now battling a severe concussion from a fall. Has a Duchene’s MD 13 yr old son. He has a life expectancy of late 20’s early 30’s. A dying cousin non cancer, ruined lungs, 3 botched back surgeries from the meds they used on her is headed for a long term facility as she can’t take care of herself.

Tennessee has about the same Draconian Opioid laws on the books. Who is the OD’s of Meth, Cocaine, Heroin all laced with Fenatayl JUNKIES. Who bought their crap off a street corner. Few months back 2 nurses OD’d. They found 1 on the toilet with the Heroin needle still stuck in her arm.

Is it sane regulation to require that all patients with certain medical conditions be tapered off opioids, as OHA proposes for Medicaid?

Thanks for the link, long post here.

To someone who works in healthcare, this article seemed to state the obvious, but I think it is also pretty obvious to anyone who has observed people.

I think these people need help, and I have given money to organizations that deal with this. I don’t think we have to shame these people to help them, but not shaming them should not relieve them of their obligation to accept responsibility for their addiction.

I know people feel differently about this, but I don’t view this kind of addiction in the same light as I view someone who has cancer. But they deserve our help too, if we can render it. I feel differently about someone who has developed an addiction due to a severe condition of pain, acute or chronic. Sometimes that is all those folks have to choose from, constant, unrelenting pain or the possibility of developing an addiction.

These people obviously have no need to accept responsibility for something they had to turn to out of desperation. I have had back pain my entire adult life to the point I have been incapacitated and unable to get out of bed even to empty my bladder. I have never asked for pain killers because I have always felt that I have a tendency towards addictive behaviors.

What I have found about pain, when you go extended periods of time without true relief, is that beyond the physical pain, it wears on you and inexorably grinds you down over time. It colors your views on nearly everything to the point the color gets filtered out and you have a very gray outlook. It begins to dominate your thoughts and rules you. (at least it did me)

I have been lucky with various treatments and a near total abdication of any physical exercise that I can get my back down to a steady level 2to level 4 pain, which is normal. I can go a month or so like that, which is...not bad. That doesn’t grind you down. I consider myself blessed, even though I feel like my life could change if I stepped off a curb wrong. But it hasn’t so...I think that is, as Andrew Klavan is fond of saying...tickety-boo.

So if you read any of my posts on this subject of opioid abuse, I know I sound sometimes as if I don’t have compassion for addicts. I do. It just makes me angry to think of people who are far worse than me who will be unable to get relief, or even have the choice available between relief and addiction because of demands that the drugs be banned or made unavailable because people got themselves killed by abusing them.
