I am not sure I have seen this one posted before but here goes.
Who was your favorite Private Detective from these mediums, TV, Movies, and Books?
I probably, like you, have several that I like. Lately once again I have been watching "Perry Mason" reruns and my favorite character was always Private Detective Paul Drake.
As far as I know, and this is back in the late 1950's, Paul Drake was maybe the first detective to have a phone in his car.
He was about the most efficient detective on TV at one point. In an era before the Internet and Computers, Paul, it seemed, could get in depth information on anyone and without Paul I am not sure Perry Mason would have won all his cases.
So go ahead and tell about your favorite PI and why. Good to lighten things up from time to time.
TV: Jim Rockford from "The Rockford Files."
Book: Sam Spade from Dashiell Hammett's "The Maltese Falcon."
I like Mannix on TV. I like the Philip Marlowe books.
Rockford Files for sure!
Paul Drake from Perry Mason
Matthew Scudder-—the Lawrence Block novels.
.
James Rockford.
Spencer
Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes.
Harry Bosch, Michael Connolly character, book and TV.
TV character.. Andy Sipowitz NYPD Blue.
RADIO: 3-way tie between Sam Spade, Dick Tracy & The Shadow...(Late 30’s and early-to-mid 40’s)
The novels are written in a film noir-esque style, containing elements of traditional mystery and detective fiction, as well as plenty of dialogue-based humor. The Garrett P.I. novels are set in a fantasy universe; the protagonist Garrett, during his adventures throughout his home city of TunFaire and across Karenta and the Cantard, meets elves, vampires, centaurs, trolls, gods, wizards, witches and more. Unlike most fantasy series, the Garrett P.I. novels focus more on the detective aspects of the story and less on the fantastic and magical aspects.
Charlie Chan - Movies on TV
Nero Wolfe
Tom Lopaka, by Robert Conrad, “Hawaiian Eye”.
Columbo and Poirot
Monk and Columbo....oldies, but good.
I agree, Harry Bosch. But he did not become a Private Detective until the tail end of his homicide detective career. And the TV series is an excellent portrayal of the book stories. Probably because Connolly is involved as a producer or director.
Speaking of Conrads, I also liked William Conrad as “Cannon”. I liked to watch him run.
McCloud was fun just to see how long it would take him to mount a horse in the middle of the big city.
