I told my wife to never stop on the interstate if the car is in any way driveable. Shred the tire, ruin the wheel, but keep driving to an exit, rest area, etc.

In the past two days, I have passed two guys lying on the ground on the traffic side of the car trying to do something underneath or behind the tire. These were on very busy roads with narrow shoulders. One of these incidents was late at night and the guy was essentially invisible until I was right on him. It was odd; neither seemed to be fixing a flat. But anyhow: two candidates for the Darwin Awards.

My years of riding a bike convinced me that some drivers are barely aware of their surroundings. If they don't expect that an obstacle will be in their path, they simply will not notice that obstacle. They will look right at it, then collide with it. If you are the obstacle, they will collide with you. Learning that lesson almost got me killed, but I did learn.

Move your car a LONG way off the road before you try to change a tire. If you can't do that, at least move yourself a long way off the road, and stay there until help arrives.
