A friend suffered a major closed head injury a bit over a year ago in this same scenario. From what I know, he occasionally wakes up and looks around but otherwise hes non communicative and non responsive. Stay in car is good advice.

The whole family, no matter how much the wife and mother-in-law are complaining.
(Oh hell, leave the MIL but at least drag the kids to safety.)
