We all know all about Windows 10s most controversial feature, and Microsoft has now confirmed it has struck again
Picked up by the ever-excellent AskWoody, the latest update for Windows 10 (patch KB4482887) has crippled gaming performance on the platform across both Nvidia and AMD GPUs. Microsoft has now confirmed the problem and issued an official warning about the update.
After installing KB4482887, users may notice graphics and mouse performance degradation with desktop gaming when playing certain games (eg: Destiny 2), explained Microsoft, with the company saying it is working on a fix.
Needless to say, users are furious. Woody Leonhard highlights two threads on Reddit in particular (1,2).
Leonhard himself, also warns: Is the problem confined to games? Highly unlikely, in my experience. Its just that gamers notice bugs sooner than most of us.

Yep... That’s where I was until recently myself. I was fine with Win 7 because I could shut off updates or pick and choose which ones I might truly need on MY terms and it just worked. Then I realized the countdown had started and Win 7 was on it’s way out the door, I was going to get caught with my pants down with Win 10 forced on me as the only MS option. NEVER doing Win 10 so Hello Linux!
So far there are so many advantages I haven’t even wanted to look back at even Win 7, I am now kicking myself in the rear for not switching sooner. Currently running both dual boot on this machine and haven’t had a reason to boot in Win 7 for many months now. I highly recommend considering this rather than getting caught at the last minute with nowhere else to go but Win 10... Because we can’t stop that very real countdown. :)
I’m more cynical: I think Microsoft owns lots of stock in companies that make memory and hard drives....
A “conflict of interest”.
Also, if someone can dust off Apple ProDos to release a new version that supports new hardware for the II line, if folks can keep the Amiga OS going and if ... well ... Linux: it’s a shame someone can’t do the same with OS/2 which was at least not lipstick on a pig from the very beginning and is now become a corpuscilating collection of unused and obsolete trash code that people were too lazy to remove or fix, but only patched down through the years.
A side note: if Microsoft really cleaned up and streamlined Windows the sales of X-Boxes and consoles would tank.
Think I’m joking? Look ups YouTube about games intentionally made to suck. It details how one game intentionally capped the frame rate and removed textures from the PC version because console sales were more profitable.
Thanks to upchuck for the ping!
And true...
At the article they cite several times last year where they messed up including deleting your personal files!
Just makes you want to upgrade to Windows 10
Or is that a big downgrade?
“I’ve come to view old silent movies as an art form.”
Me too. And even my wife who is a bit younger than me, started to be amazed with how crashes and action scenes were filmed as one take, one chance, one run and they pulled it off so well. The physical abilities and gymnastics Buster Keaton pulled off in real time with no stunt doubles was absolutely incredible yet to matched today.
My system was updated with this particular update on March 3rd and so far, no issues.
I do hate that updates are issued and wreak havoc for some people.
Downgrade, if you haven’t used it yet you are NOT going to like it compared to Win 7. First time I used it I actually took the time to file a formal complaint with the FTC and their local better business Bureau. lol
There is an older article that goes with those images... But I think he has not addressed and edited it concerning the newest Linux Distros. lol

That’s the problem... They never clean out the old trash, they just try to put lipstick on it and add more to the trash pile. So now your machine has to not only shovel the new trash but it has to shovel the old trash first that should have been hauled off already. Drupal was that way until someone had the brilliant idea of cleaning up the code a bit here and there.
I have a question for you friend... Can you access the port assignment list in windows 10? A comparison of this port list in Win 10 up against a default install of a Linux Distro would speak for it’s self... :)
I would love to have this truth revealed. If I could get a hold of a Win 10 port assignment list I would do the homework and post a comparison. I ask you because you are so deeply knowledgeable about both. :)
Yeah, I've had some long conversations with "her", AKA "Bob". I used to work with a Pakistani guy who we put on those support calls until he turned to us and said, "It is no use. I do not understand them either."
Best was when one of our software vendors established a call centre in Australia for after-hours support. That accent I could listen to for hours, and did.
This problem, though, is pretty sloppy work. It's one thing when a weird combination of hardware coughs up a lung at an update, but this one happens with the two biggest video vendors in the world and there's simply no way that it couldn't be caught if anyone at the mothership was testing it before it went out the door. It's getting to be a sad, old story by now.
Reason #8 why I stay with 2009 Windows 7 Pro x64, on both HP home desktops and the HP lapper.
H1B visa level sweat shop coders.
That’s quite a screed.
What you're looking for is the "netstat" command, which is available in both Windows 10 and Linux. The command line options are different but you can get a list of active ports easily with either one.
Linux: netstat --help
Windows: netstat /?
I remember reading that back when it was posted. Asked around with programmers in the know and apparently everything he claims about 10 is true. It made my mind up for me that Win 7 was my last dealings with MS.
But to be fair in the last part of that he links to his criticisms of Linux also, but I didn’t read it. Because I already made my mind up back then that I was doing Linux no matter what before I would ever do Win 10. And since it was from 2015 he hadn’t played with the better GUI features of the newer Distro versions yet.
Cool, thank you! I wasn’t sure if Win 10 would let you see what the port assignments were or not. My wife’s is dual boot linux over Win 10. I will have to go try to get a list from hers.
Note, I ran netstat on Win10 as a user who is a member of the local administrators group. I don't know if it would work if you're a regular (non-privileged) user.
