HHS will reallocate millions of dollars from some of its health programs to increase shelter capacity for the "overwhelming number" of migrant children, Secretary Alex Azar told Congressional appropriators in letters this week.
Children who cross the border without parents or family are often referred to HHS for shelter, food and other services until sponsors are found in the U.S. But HHS's shelters are nearly full, and the agency needs to take funds from other programs to pay for more space, Azar said.
That includes up to $286 million from health programs that fund Head Start, Alzheimer's care and cancer prevention. Most of the money will come from the Administration for Children and Families, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health.
Up to $99 million from within the Office of Refugee Resettlement will also be reprogrammed, Azar said.
But Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), the chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee's health panel, accused HHS of "robbing vital health and human services initiatives in order to pay for their failed policies."
"We cannot continue to spend taxpayer dollars on the Presidents manufactured crisis at the border, which is government-sanctioned child abuse," DeLauro said in a statement.

Wow - blaming the president because they wont allow him to hold the wall to stop the millions of democrat voters they want?
I know they’re children, but they are illegals, nonetheless. They should not benefit from denying funds to Americans that have already been allocated.
We need to start telling LEGAL blacks and Latinos that we’re taking money that would be used for economic development to spend it all on illegals.
GOP Conservatives should start saying, “Each illegal cost us about $70K each. It will be necessary to cut back on programs that help poor communities because democrats are making us spend so much on ILLEGALS. Start by cutting off obamaphones.
If we’re going to deny real Americans help, we should be thrifty in sheltering those illegal children. Let’s shelter them in Mexico, or perhaps even in their home countries.
This will set off the left BIG TIME, ‘cause they think all we have to do is print the money for their fantasies.
well once we accept there entry we can move them around anywhere on US soil right?
How about we establish a bigger ‘embassy’ in once of the central American countries, and ship them back to that embassy for holding until hearings are complete. Or buy diego Garcia from the british
.
It’s remarkable that dem can turn this around to blame Trump.
Exactly.
Roy is about the only person that could put a democrat back in that seat. We don’t need him selfishly tearing our state apart again. There is no way I would vote for him.
Sorry. I thought you were agreeing with me on a Roy Moore post.
But you are correct.
What a waste of American taxpayer dollars. It can get very expensive making Nasty Nan’s little brown “sparklers” from south of the border the “future face of America.”
I agree with you about Roy too! :-)
I like our Alaskan islands. They are beautiful. See how many criminals want to come here illegally, demanding welfare, if they get to live at our expense but in someplace colder than they ever imagined. How many would turn around and go home, with their “legitimate” fears instantly forgotten?
WHO, EXACTLY, IS WINNING?
How about we save those millions and more by not letting them in.
There’s an idea.
A simple solution. Print Mexican Dollars and then exchange those counterfeit paper Mexican dollars for real America dollars. Use the American dollars to pay for the illegals from Mexico who are in the USA. Or just rob a Mexican Bank. Or send in the swat team and steal the Mexican gold reserves.
The funny thing about the twisted logic of that democrat is, the Obama administration did the very same thing.
