Joshua Nerius became privy to his parents anti-vaxxer convictions only after he contracted measles himself at 30 years old. Now hes speaking out against parents who hold similar beliefs, calling them people who want to spread fear.
What began as a rash and high fever in the spring of 2016 was later discovered to be none other than measles a highly contagious, and often life-threatening disease thats become increasingly rare since the introduction of a vaccine in 1963.
It was only after an emergency room doctor told Nerius his condition strongly resembled measles that Nerius asked his mother if hed been vaccinated. She responded with a thumbs-down emoji.
Anti-vaxxers, or, those against vaccinations, are often considered to share more of a fringe mindset, often holding steadfast to the belief that vaccinating children can lead to afflictions such as autism. While this claim has been disproved by many reputable sources, fervent anti-vaxxers argue the denial is a conspiracy orchestrated by Big Pharma.
Dr. Paul Offit, who is both a professor of pediatrics at University of Pennsylvanias Perelman School of Medicine and director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia, spoke to CNN about the children he treated during 1991s measles outbreak in the City of Brotherly Love. They were absolutely miserable. And occasionally, they were dead, he said, referencing the nine children who died as a result of the outbreak.

“How about the smallpox? More died from the shots than the disease.”
.
Does that make it more probable to have shingles as an adult?
When 20 year olds get cancer, should they also blame their parents? They chose whether to give the kid an anti cancer diet and environment. At some point an adult has to take responsibility for the rest of his lifes health.
Parents usually try their absolute best to keep their kids healthy, but not everyone agrees on an exact path to health. Its called freedom.
And Hepatitis B, at five hours old, is freakin insane. It shows how crazy the CDC and everyone else is, for a disease you have to get from unprotected sex with an infected person, or from an infected needle.

You really are an @$$. But thats OK. You imagine a vain thing, which will be your undoing.

Is English your first language ?
Oh suck it up!
but at age 10, I had German measles. I dont know how.
Germans.
Great, then you will never blame any parents!
You see, no vaccine is 100% effective. People get something they were immunized for all the time.
For every tragedy cited due to not being vaccinated there are plenty of adverse reactions related to taking vaccines. Research the history of the federal Vaccine Court which has paid out millions to families whose children have been damaged by vaccines and then have a gag order placed on them so their are not able to warn others of the possible danger in taking vaccines.
When I was young it was expected that a child would be out 10 days to two weeks with mumps, measles, or chickenpox. Schools had little to no reason to weigh in on the situation because the child was essentially quarantined.
Hate to break it to you, it is not 100% preventable, not even 90%.
All I know is, do you know anyone who’s gotten polio lately? Or smallpox? Or German measles? I don’t. And why do you think that is? Accident? No. Vaccinations.
I though the only anti-vaxxers were on the looney left. Thanks for educating me how far off I was.
POLIO is a far cry from chicken pox. And New polio has arisen and is far more deadly.
I am not anti vax. I am anti so many vax especially vax that are essentially convenience and not for life threatening diseases.
I supported and slow vaccinated all my children for HiB, polio, DPT, Some of the children chose to have the hep vaccines as adults.
Most had children pox.
In 2015, the Pew Research Center conducted a survey of 2 thousand adults which concluded about 12 percent of liberals and 10 percent of conservatives believed that childhood vaccines are unsafe.
My Heb B shots only claim 74% chance of stopping Hep B. Why is that? Because no vaccine is guaranteed to work, EVEN WHEN EVERYTHING IS DONE RIGHT.
I have two older relatives with continued polio issues, as well.
If you had ever read your Bible, you would understand.
I don’t trust those polls. We don’t know how they defined “conservative” and “liberal”. The most conservative Christians I know (Amish) and homeschoolers have the highest exemption rates. Minorities who have been injured by the trirumvirate of crap food, crap water and over-vaccination, and who are skeptical of govt mandates, are skeptical. The ill-educated are most likely to do what they are told by the doctor, because they don’t do any personal research, are NOT skeptical. College educated are more skeptical. Every D presidential candidate is pro-mandatory vax. The most conservative and the most liberty Republicans are pro-parental consent.
That's a good question. I don't know of any research on that.
The problem is, the physicians are taught in medical school that you can only get chicken pox once - which is baloney. I had a student once who had it 5 times. The 4th and 5th times it was documented by an analysis of the lesions. I know I've had it multiple times. It gets milder each time. Does that make me more susceptible to shingles. Good grief - I hope not.
Yep...too much too soon.
My reading of the Bible says nothing about endangering children by not getting them vaccinated.
