Einstein was just a Patent Office clerk.

He benefitted from his occupation. If he did not discover E=mc^2, others were around the corner. Einstein had no real formal education to carry him oneward. All discoverers of new formulas were one trick ponies.

The exception was Ben Franklin, the most prolific inventer, who also was a product of his time. Electricity, and its many forms, was waiting to be discovered.

The Science picks the inventor.

“Einstein had no real formal education to carry him oneward. “

Common false Internet rumor. He was well educated including a doctorate’s degree.

TheNext.

Apparently not TheNext reader of actual history :)

Nor TheNext best authority on all things Einstein :)

“The science picks the inventor”

Nor TheNext producer of witty and logical quotes :)

General relativity and quantum physics. The two greatest scientific discoveries of the 20th century. Einstein discovered one and co-discovered the other.

...

Actually, E=mc^2 had already been discovered, and the math was already done. Einstein came up with the idea of why it was correct. His idea was that the luminiferous aether wasn’t necessary and that the speed of light was constant. His idea was supported by interferometer experiments and the observation of the stellar aberration.
