Some 18 months after being rescued from stone-throwing children, a street-dwelling mongrel has emerged as India's top dog in the country's elite bomb- and drug-sniffing squad.
"Asha" - meaning "hope" in Hindi - was rescued by West Bengal police when they found her being mistreated outside their training facility.
"The dog was bleeding when she was taken inside the campus," senior West Bengal Police Training Academy official Dipankar Bhattacharya told AFP.
Officers originally intended keeping the mixed-breed stray as a pet, but Asha turned out to have a nose every bit as good as the German Shepherds and Labradors usually trained to sniff out explosives and drugs.
Sajal Mondal, the head of the academy, said she passed the gruelling training with flying colours and that drugs and explosives like TNT were no match for Asha's keen sense of smell.

It is my experience that mixed breed mongrel dogs are smart as hell!....................
Asha is definitely not a pit bull.
We had a dog of similar looks. Mixed breed mongrel, and he was smart as hell!.................
Good dog! Now we will sniff out all those Indians!!!
One does not need a dog for that.......................
Called “hybrid vigor”, the opposite of inbreeding.
Smartest dog I knew (could read my mind) was a Heinz 57.
She looks just like the dog we had when I was growing up.
Let’s hope the Indian Police have learned something, and will seek out other strays and shelter dogs for future service. I’m sure it would be much cheaper than purebreeds...................
Melting pot outperforms salad bowl.
Why don’t we ever see blood hounds or bird dogs as drug sniffing dogs? I thought they had excellent noses.....
They are also expensive..................
Yeah, smart enough to rip your throat out when you're not expecting it.
Nope, this dog was friendly and protective. We raised him and his mother from puppies. He’s the only dog I’ve had that I actually miss.
His name was ‘Tigger’........................
Like a lot of Americans. See Bill Murray in Stripes.
I had a cocker-poodle before it was a recognized breed. He was the smartest (and most civilized) dog I ever saw. He made me think I was a good dog trainer (I was not).
He was also alpha: wanted to attack any strange dog in his territory, no matter how big. A huge Labrador almost killed him; the bloodied dog simply wanted more.
His etiquette around the house or in the car was impeccable until something aroused his killer instinct, at which time he went from darling to savage in the blink of an eye: awesome to behold. He had a big, deep bark, not a typical squeaky one like many smallish dogs. He scared several big, tough guys who mistakenly thought he was harmless and pettable.
He also scared off burglars at least twice. He sensed them from the garage through several closed doors. When we let him in, he went straight to the place they tried to enter (we found footprints outside).
Like I said . . .
Which is not hard to do....from what I'm told.
