New Traffic Laws in CA Driving in CA is more expensive for people who do CA stops at signs, among other violations. All of the above violations allow for you to go to traffic school for 8 hours. You might want to review these with the drivers in your household to prevent any surprises.

Yes, there is a big difference in what I am talking about. I live in a rural area about one-half mile from a four-way stop. I hear the sounds of those pieces of crap at all hours when they accelerate. It ranks up there with the neighbor’s dog that barks all day and night. I like to hear the sounds of the wind blowing or the birds chirping. Not the sound of some dude with miniature unit disease.

Of course, the third violation, “Uninsured Car”, doesn’t apply to illegals, or any hispanics, of course.

Anyone know if riding a motorcycle with earbuds under your helmet listening to music is illegal in California?

CA's law says it is illegal to wear them in both ears while driving or bicycling. I'm guessing motorcycles fall in the "driving" category...

>>> The decibel level for exhaust on vehicles in California is 95. A cop has no way to measure this. <<<

There’s an app for that.

Decibel X: dB, dBA Noise Meter by SkyPaw Co. Ltd

Available in the App Store.

For my helmet I have a SENA 20S Bluetooth comm unit. I have two speakers in the ear pads of the helmet. The speakers are not in, or over, the ear.

Something like that should be legal.

It's not so much of a problem when the car is stolen. The rightful owner will have the insurance.

Why can motorcycles get away with super loud exhausts they ticket cars and trucks for?

When I'm in traffic, I actually prefer the loud motorcycles. That way, I know not to change lanes while the pinhead is driving between lanes at normal highway speed.

My real concern when out and about are the Electric cars that emit 0dB of sound when they run. If you don't see them coming, you sure aren't going to hear them. A pedestrian disaster waiting to happen, IMHO.

FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS for disagreeing with a cop over whether the light was already red when you went through it???

THO HUNDRED DOLLARS for forgetting your drivers’ license in your other pants?

The HD and cruiser riders in general are the worst offenders. If you really want to hear something crappy, many Japanese cruisers when fitted with the same nearly-straight pipes that many HD/cruiser riders favour absolutely sound like garbage (and often don’t even run right - HD or Japanese). And they’re super loud even just pulling away from a stop at a normal speed. At least the sports bikes with aftermarket exhausts don’t usually get too loud until they hit higher rpms and throttle openings.

My last couple of bikes have been strictly stock exhaust. Nice and quiet, just the way I like it, as it draws less unwanted attention. When cops hear some bike howling from a mile away they tend to assume (probably correctly) that it is going quickly.

Not all Harleys, even with aftermarket exhausts, are unreasonably noisy. It is possible to fit pipes that are louder/deeper than stock (which is pretty quiet) without getting to eardrum splitting volume levels.

It makes me sad every time I ride by a child and they’re covering their ears because they’ve been blasted by too many selfish idiots with stupidly loud exhausts.

Bikes aren’t the only offenders, though - there are diesel pickups with huge 6” pipes that make a hell of a racket, V8 muscle cars and pickups with overly loud free flow exhausts, and, of course, the idiots with 6” exhaust tips on their Honda Civics (and similar).

Stupid laws:
Forgot to change the address.

Beg to differ. If the DL can be used as ID to vote, it should be correct; otherwise, opens up to double voting (if CA even cares about that).

“I’d rather hear a Harley than any rice rocket.”

I’d rather not hear either. And I assume others feel the same way, so I don’t have a noisy bike, rice or otherwise.

There are too many parameters and
variables involved when running sound tests in an outside environment.
I should have said there’s no way for
a cop to run a sound test on the side
of the road with any accuracy.

“if you own a car that requires a smog certificate in order to register it (1976 and newer) and you have an exhaust that is loud enough to give law enforcement a reason to pull you over, you’re getting fined! For now, this amendment won’t have any effect on pre-smog era cars (1975 and older).”

Thanks for clearing that up.

I’d hate to see Jay Leno getting a ticket every week.

Many CA departments issue decibel meters to police.

And you can get accurate apps for smart phones that do the same thing.

The police have plenty of ways to measure how loud your vehicle is.

Also, decibels increase in a geometric pattern. 3 decibels is 100% louder than 2, etc. So, something that is “just five decibels louder” is *way* louder than you imply.
