WASHINGTON — Anti-vaccination activists, some with their (presumably unvaccinated) children, packed the Dirksen Senate Office Building Tuesday morning for a hearing that they hoped would vindicate, or at least recognize as legitimate, their fear that protecting their families from measles runs the risk of something worse, including autism and other disorders.
As the doors closed on the room where the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions was meeting, a woman could be heard pleading to be allowed in to give her side of what has become a heated, and potentially dangerous, controversy.
That hope would be quickly dashed. The committee’s chairman, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., recalled the polio epidemic of his youth, before the invention of a vaccine for the disease, which can cause permanent paralysis and respiratory failure. “I had classmates who lived in iron lungs,” he said. “Vaccines save lives.”
The hearing comes at a time when mistrust of vaccines has been inflamed by suspicion of government and of science and has spread — virally, you could say — by social media. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 11 states are currently experiencing measles outbreaks. Measles was declared eradicated in the United States in 2000, but herd immunity — a community’s collective resistance to disease — has been eroding as parents have opted out of vaccinating their children.
The anti-vaccination movement has succeeded in “literally bringing back plagues of the past,” lamented one witness, John G. Boyle of the Immune Deficiency Foundation.

Exactly the percentage of folks hit by lightning.
On the other hand, in the 2016-2017 flu season, over 80,000 were killed. And flu takes between 40,000 and 100,000 every year in the US alone. Every year.
Seems to me these old bitty, couldda-been-a-nurse busy bodies need a hormone check.
If you give the two above facts to every American they way vaccines are compelled, they will laugh and point at the busy bodies in public.

Anecdotes are not proof. They are not even usable facts.
The government has spent quite a long time dis-educating the public in regards to things like second hand smoke and climate change. It’s no wonder that something like this comes back to bite them in the ass.

Smart moms are bringing back measles, German measles, mumps and chicken pox parties to build strong kids. It also further refines our species emerging immunity to these diseases, which 10,000 years ago took entire generations to their grave.
Many, if not most of us on this site had all four “childhood diseases”, likely because our moms took us to a “measles party”...before we entered kindergarten.
EVERYONE got these diseases deliberately.
Now the CDC says we are in crises and emergency.
Back in the 70’s, right out of high school, I spent a summer working on the crib ward of the State Hospital which was turned into a prison in the mid 80’s).
About half the elderly patients there were brain damaged by measles in early childhood or rubella in utero before vaccines where developed. Almost none of the “clients” in this mental institution had actual mental illness. They were mostly brain damaged by accident or illness with very low functioning, many blind or deaf or both.
We were slowly moving them to nursing homes, preferably near a relative if one could be located and was interested.
People have been killed, and other horribly damaged by these diseases.
In very small numbers.
Minuscule in relative terms.
Not to worry the diseased ridden invaders coming across the borders, invaders air lifted in the dead of night and just about anyone who is destitute, brown or tan from any sh##hole in the world will do the trick, this is the plague
Did you mention the flu kills 100+ times as many people EVERY YEAR as all 4 of those childhood diseases combined did, pre-vaccine?
The term “hysteria” is the most appropriate. Especially given its’ etymology.

One could argue that the vaccine is causing just as much injury and death as it is preventing.
For what, exactly?
Like...why?
No, the numbers were quite staggering, especially with the baby boom after the second world war. The vaccines didn’t just save lives, they prevented huge numbers of damaged children. The encephalitis rate is 1/1000, pneumonia 1/20 and severe ear infection 1/10 and that’s now, when American children are far better fed and medical care vastly superior that it was 70 years ago. And this is just measles. Rubella causes birth defects and blindness, mumps can result in encephalitis, meningitis and deafness, not just sterility.
One of the reasons states thought they could close these institutions was because they no longer had a steady stream of adults brain damaged as children that needed housing when their families passed away or could no longer care for them.
Just because you saw a lot of them, does not mean the numbers were statistically significant.
The death rate was <1/100th of the flu death rate, and everyone endeavored to ensure their children were infected.
I’d guess more brains have been damaged by flu fevers than these diseases, but I can’t find data.
Disability rate? I can’t find hard data yet. If you find some please be sure to shoot it my way.

I suspect you just wish to have a belief that is divorced from facts. It’s comfortable for you, as you’re already invested in a particular point of view.
Everyone didn’t endeavor to make sure their children were infected. My siblings and I are all post vaccine invention boomers and as a damaged polio survivor he made sure we were vaccinated. Our aunt was deafened by measles. I had a classmate deafened by measles..

I call bullshit on your data.
The total, nationwide deaths reported from the 40’s through the 60’s never exceeded 600 per year, some years having millions of cases.
But even if your 1/1000 were correct that’s still lower than the flu.
And we don’t compel anyone to get a flu shot. And people don’t get their panties in a wad over other folks not getting a flu shot.
