LOL! Yeah, it's pretty desolate in areas. Cell phone? More like Sat phone is some places. We love it. Nice side trips and some surprises in places.

Question from a New Yawker :)

Is there really any road or highway left in the US where you would be in serious trouble if your car and cell phone died?

I mean any place where you might not see another car for a few days go by?

Thanks in advance.

It’s lonely because those sanctimonious Cartwrights take everything for themselves. Weird how their women always seem to die on them.

I don’t know ... I’ve been on I-10 from Tucson all the way to Odessa and that was pretty desolate. Same thing goes for I-70 out of Denver and across Kansas. Flat and no scenery. Booooooooring.

I think I already sent you this but it should probably have wider distribution

Northern Nevada looks better every day. Got to go see the home we just bought in Gardnerville next week.

One of the longest limited access roads in the US is the Florida Turnpike from Yeehaw Junction to Kissimmee.

I think it about 45 miles or so with no exits.

The land is flat, the road is mostly straight, and Brazilian Holly lines side of the road most of the way. Boring. Boring. Boring.

Returning to Colorado from Yosemite Nat’l Park in California we drove across Nevada on Hwy.50, starting just east of
Fallon, NV all the way to the Nevada/Utah state line east of Ely. It's a interesting drive with some 20+ miles stretches of
highway that are straight as an arrow. Had my Porsche cranked up to well over 100 mph on some of these stretches. This portion of Hwy. 50 follows the old Pony Express route ... if you think it's lonely today imagine what it was like back in those days. If you were manning one of the Pony Express relay stations out in the middle of nowhere that would be even lonelier.

Highway 50 really isn’t very “lonely” anymore. There’s always a small bit of traffic. The lightest traffic, though, is on that stretch of road between Fallon and Ely. It’s the most scenic stretch too.

Now if you want a real “lonely” Nevada highway, I’d suggest the Extraterrestrial Highway (375) from Warm Springs to the intersection just north of Ash Springs. Just watch for cattle on this road. It’s open range, and quite dangerous to drive after dark.

Drove that on the way to Fallon. Only one vehicle on the road, an RV and it kicked up a rock that broke my windshield.

Back in the late 80’s, the trip on I-10 between Barstow and Needles was a scorching, boring 100 mile drive. Only thing that kept me awake was the story I heard about some devil-worshippers inhabiting some abandoned town along the way.

Years ago, I drove cross country. The road that is now Interstate 80 from SLC to Wendover had a section of road that was 40 to 50 miles long as straight as the crow flies. Nothing but road for the entire segment back then.

That’s a bit North of the road this article is talking about.

In the 70’s we did a drive from Vegas to Death Valley. That was a damn lonely road!
