This is the loneliest road in America

Where the state of Nevada folds in half—from the elbow on its western arm at Lake Tahoe across to its Utah border—you’ll find the most direct route across the state. It crosses several communities, a handful of mountain ranges, a national park, and one reservoir, where bobcats, foxes, and wild horses roam free. There’s life, yes, but not a familiar way of life for many. It’s a place where the lines between John Wayne Westerns and everyday life blur, where ghost towns bleed into living ones. This is Route 50, the Loneliest Road in America.

We actually have a phased temporal distortion set up at the state borders to make it look all flat, boring and desolate.

You folks come back and visit one ‘o these days!

Returning to Colorado from Yosemite Nat’l Park in California we drove across Nevada on Hwy.50, starting just east of
Fallon, NV all the way to the Nevada/Utah state line east of Ely. It's a interesting drive with some 20+ miles stretches of
highway that are straight as an arrow. Had my Porsche cranked up to well over 100 mph on some of these stretches. This portion of Hwy. 50 follows the old Pony Express route ... if you think it's lonely today imagine what it was like back in those days. If you were manning one of the Pony Express relay stations out in the middle of nowhere that would be even lonelier.

Spitfire was a Triumph. MG was an MG. Couldn’t be both.

Yeah ours was the Triumph version. Loved the tilt away bonnet.

I’ve been on I-10 from Tucson all the way to Odessa

As a Texan, I'd like to know how you did that.

Caught that, did you? Forgot to mention that I exited I-10 on this side of Van Horn and took 20 up to Odessa. Clicked on "Post" before realizing my screw-up. Good eye, my fellow Texan.

But ... my point remains. That stretch of I-10 from Tucson all the way to El Paso is very little to look at.

Highway 50 really isn’t very “lonely” anymore. There’s always a small bit of traffic. The lightest traffic, though, is on that stretch of road between Fallon and Ely. It’s the most scenic stretch too.

Now if you want a real “lonely” Nevada highway, I’d suggest the Extraterrestrial Highway (375) from Warm Springs to the intersection just north of Ash Springs. Just watch for cattle on this road. It’s open range, and quite dangerous to drive after dark.

Drove that on the way to Fallon. Only one vehicle on the road, an RV and it kicked up a rock that broke my windshield.

Back in the late 80’s, the trip on I-10 between Barstow and Needles was a scorching, boring 100 mile drive. Only thing that kept me awake was the story I heard about some devil-worshippers inhabiting some abandoned town along the way.

To compound matters he was driving an MG Spitfire. You could pass trucks on the underneath in those things.

Yep. I once drove a Triumph Spitfire under one to prove to my coworkers that I could. It was parked though. Now I drive a Pontiac Solstice and am very cautious around those big rigs.
