I’m Raising Little Feminists Who Love To Wear Makeup

“Can I put some of your blush on?” my six-year-old daughter Penny asks, expertly climbing onto the bathroom counter and sliding next to me.

“Sure,” I answer, focusing on a steady hand as I not-so-expertly apply eyeliner to my top eyelid.

We sit in companionable silence while I apply a subtle amount of makeup for my night out with some girlfriends, and she cakes on the blush until it achieves the exact effect she’s looking for.

A few years ago, my kids started to take an interest in my makeup, a very small collection of tubes and compacts that I apply rarely. My two oldest, now almost seven and five, would line up each item and ask me to explain what each thing was used for. I don’t know why I was shocked by their interest — of course these mystical and adult-seeming contraptions would delight my children. At the time, I felt conflicting emotions and wondered if painting my face while raising my children to be feminists was a contradiction.

All little girls don't want to grow up to be ballerinas.

Some want to wear Muck boots and drive a tractor.

I know this uber-liberal mom who was absolutely horrified that her daughter wanted to dress up as a Disney Princess. A bunch of them. She wanted to be Cinderella, her mother wanted her to dress up as a neurosurgeon instead. She wanted to dress up as Sleeping Beauty, her mother brought her the makings of an RBG costume, which totally grossed the girl out.

So us less sympathetic observers repeated to her her blather about how you have to let children be who they want to be and you can't force gender conformity or non-princess oppression on them in the name of yielding to dominant social forces.

So this mortified mother reluctantly let her daughter dress like a Disney princess while she dragged her to feminist rallies and social protests, spending most of her time there rationalizing and justifying herself to strangers about why her stubborn daughter was acting like a normal girl.

Why is everyone assuming they are girls? Maybe they are boys and she is trying to convince them they are girls. This kind of abuse is worth lots of street cred for libs.

Real feminism is about all the good qualities of women. Political feminism is about advancing leftist social goals and attacking anyone who doesn’t.

The word is now tainted and unusable by people of good will. Just like "Republican".

I’ve debated the makeup conundrum for some time. I’ve even considered ditching it to prove it’s not necessary — an archaic beautification tool meant to feed women’s insecurities. Eventually, I decided that, in order to demystify makeup, I would embrace it, and re-write the script passed down for generations.

LOL. Talk about justification. This proud Feminist just can't bring herself to ditch make up. The social pressure of the patriarchy and all. So she "demystifies" makeup to "re-write the script". She gets to wear makeup and still be a proud feminist!!!! What a load.

They are all little feminists until the hormones kick in because they are little people who view grownups with a combination of fascination and horror. Nobody understands why the grownups do the crazy things they do, it makes no sense, and then the hormones hit. I guarantee you that those little girls will be hearing “blah, blah, blah, intersectionality, blah blah” because even I can’t even follow this woman without my mind drifting to other topics.
