COLUMBIA, SC (WSPA) - Officials say the winner of the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot from October has claimed their prize.
The South Carolina Education Lottery Commission says the winner chose to remain anonymous and chose a one-time cash payout of $877,784,124.
This is the largest jackpot payout to a single winner in the history of the United States, according to the SC Education Lottery.
The winning ticket for the October 23, 2018 drawing was sold at the KC Mart in Simpsonville.
We are delighted that the winner is a South Carolinian and has come forward to claim this remarkable prize," said SC Education Lottery Commission Executive Director Hogan Brown.
The winner retained Jason Kurland of Rivkin Radler of New York as legal representation and to act as a spokesperson, according to the lottery commission.
The winner says they bought the Quick Pick Mega Millions lottery ticket after allowing another customer in front of them in line at the store.
The state of South Carolina will get $61 million in income taxes from the winner.
Wonder what the state tax would be in NJ or NY or CA..
No tax on it in California.
Hard to believe they’d let all that free cash slide.
Don’t you mean a newly found relative? 8>)

I read that as nice, probably older, people.
Well... I hope so anyway.
Probably end up with 500m net on that payout. That Would safely generate $25 million per year. Half a million a week is a lot to spend without being stupid.
Wow, that’s a wad!!~
Actually, under my plan, there would have been 1600 “million dollar” winners.
A better way to look at it is “Every time I’ve had a disaster in my life, I just so happened to have a windfall and could cover the expense.” But yeah - I’m the same way. I just saved a bunch of money by doing my car repair myself and was so happy and proud and was going to use that as my excuse to look into buying a new gun. The next week my computer crashed and I had to take it in.
I was just talking to somebody that was praying about how they were going to cover a newly found medical expense in the thousands of dollars. The second day of praying about it she heard that “still small voice” say “You already have it.”
She got home that night, and saw that her tax refund was in the mailbox. It was about $100 shy, but still.
Back when the lottery was going on I was reading lots of stories about the winners. You had the folks that started acting rich. One couple was divorced after a year. The man another year or so later killed himself. The woman was found dead in her mansion, her three dead cats also dead. She was found several months after she had died alone. (And obviously nobody missed her).
The successful ones were older folks. Invested in aluminum siding and new windows to keep the drafts out. Got a new car for the wife. Set up a nursing home account for themselves, college funds for all the grand children, and an emergency trust fund for the kids. Gave the other 20 million to the hospital.
Everybody says poor EEE. But he died doing what he enjoyed and with a smile on his face.
Nupe. Under your plan, you’d never see a $1.6 billion jackpot. There are a lot of games that limit payouts. They don’t sell.
I would have a full staff: crew, service people, chef and staff, medical staff, etc.
My wife and I would travel the world... changing locations once we get bored with where we are.
Aside from traveling and my passion for photography, my primary job will be overseeing my stateside team of investment folks and researching worthy charities for receiving donations and possible bequeaths.
I could probably get used to such a lifestyle.
I think I saw that movie.
dang won 1.5 billion and already down to nearly 700 million due to their first bad choice.
lol
then they have to pay taxes on that gonna guess around half of the 877.. so lets say they end up with 450 million... which means they lost over one billion right off the bat of that amount.
now they would of had to pay taxes no matter what, but the only time payment option was just pure stupidity.
I hope the new found wealth will not blind the winner to God who is the greatest treasure of all.
Same.
Perhaps you didn’t read the articles at the time where Illinois issued IOUs for its lottery distribution. Take the money and run. if the people are older than 45, the lump sum seems like the no brainer.
The longest that type of store will save tapes is about 20 days. If that. I’m afraid the winner is “in the wind” as they say. Good for them.
Its actually a government run lottery in most states. The transparency rules are set up to prevent the appearance of corruption. It would be bad if Uncle Billy won the jackpot two or three times a year.
