COLUMBIA, SC (WSPA) - Officials say the winner of the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot from October has claimed their prize.
The South Carolina Education Lottery Commission says the winner chose to remain anonymous and chose a one-time cash payout of $877,784,124.
This is the largest jackpot payout to a single winner in the history of the United States, according to the SC Education Lottery.
The winning ticket for the October 23, 2018 drawing was sold at the KC Mart in Simpsonville.
“We are delighted that the winner is a South Carolinian and has come forward to claim this remarkable prize," said SC Education Lottery Commission Executive Director Hogan Brown.
The winner retained Jason Kurland of Rivkin Radler of New York as legal representation and to act as a spokesperson, according to the lottery commission.
The winner says they bought the Quick Pick Mega Millions lottery ticket after allowing another customer in front of them in line at the store.
The state of South Carolina will get $61 million in income taxes from the winner.
Of course they did. I’m sure the winner circled the deadline date in his journal and did the right thing by hiring an atty. to do handle all that legal stuff AND become anonymous. He did his research.
If you see an ad on Craigslist stating “I won the lottery, let’s party and only hot women invited” in SC, I’m sure it’s the dude...
Why not have 877 people win one million?
I try really hard, and somewhat often, to imagine what I would spend and buy and collect and wear and experience... and I can never get past the $2-3m mark for myself, and $2-3m for each member of my immediate (and small) family, plus another $5m in a boring investment like an annuity... even at "just" 5%, that's $250k/yr, forever. I'm pretty good with $5k/wk for sitting on a beach.
That's $25m, tops. That leaves $852m, LOL. All that just gets given away to charities, put into scholarship funds and benevolent trusts, etc.
I just see no need for huge houses or boats or filling 57 car garages. I'll travel and eat and drink and adventure in as many places as I can find flights and sailings to... but there's no way on earth that I could ever spew more than $5k/wk to do so.
Even so, it is amusing every time that they ask a big winner what they will do, and they always say "pay bills and debts and buy a house". Yeah, that's the first million or so.... now what about the other 876? *shrug* I dunno. We cannot even imagine.
For those who have the skills and desire and drive to turn it into capital-generation and jobs and factories and more, all with entrepreneurial skills.... God bless! I want the world to have many more like you. That's just not in my skill set, and I am not going to squander a billion dollars trying to pretend.

That's much closer to what I think I might do... vastly improve the lives of hundreds of families with a big gift to each (although taxes will kill a lot of it... consult your attorneys and accountants)... the only tough part is finding those that are both deserving and know how to not squander the excellent opportunity.
Because there wouldn’t be that much to win, and it wouldn’t generate publicity for lottery dreams.
Most state have smaller lotteries, like Lotto America or Lucky for Life. They never make national news.

Lotteries are corruption-bound monopolies, and false advertising is permitted.

It is. I remember the last time the lottery got over a billion I actually did an internet search for lawyers with experience in this field. Jason Kurland appears to be the go to lawyer for this kind of thing. I hope to retain his services one day.
Because 477 would buy ciggys and beer and be poor within 1 month
200 would buy mansions, cars with 22" rims, hookers and blow...and be broke in 3 months....
100 would buy risky investments and be poor in 6 months
99 would TRY to do their own investments and be poor in 6 years .
1 would do the right thing and assemble a CPA, trust atty, and fixed income broker.
Yes. SC’s top income tax bracket is 7%. And I would gladly pay that, especially if it comes with the option of remaining anonymous..

My feelings exactly. I’ve never purchased a lottery ticket but would if your scenario was the case. I think more people would too because the odds of winning a decent amount go up. And that would put even more money in the pot.
I’d probably die from excessive alcohol consumption or STDs from strippers.
The main reason the pot grew to $1.6 billion in the first place was because of the feeding frenzy the last few weeks. People just aren’t excited anymore by a measly million dollars. If you want to limit it to a million dollars per person, fine. But you aren’t going to be giving it to 877 people.
I could win a billion dollars easily. But a billion other people would all have the same number. And somehow I would owe all of the taxes on the billion. That’s the way my luck works.

Yeah, I’d pay off my own credit card debt and then happily run up a heck of a lot more!
