Rent control gains momentum after Chicago voters again give it thumbs up
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 3/2/2019 | Alexandra Arriaga

Debra Miller considers herself and her husband Jimi lucky.

“We were only homeless 19 months,” she said Friday, recounting how she and her husband were evicted in 2010 when she became ill, lost her job and was unable to cover the cost of rent.

Almost a decade later, rents have only gotten more expensive in Chicago.

Miller is a member of the Lift the Ban Coalition — a group of community organizations whose fight to repeal Illinois’ two-decade ban on rent control is gaining momentum. She joined dozens of protesters Friday who demonstrated outside the downtown office of the Chicago Association of Realtors, which has opposed any effort at allowing rent control.

The protesters held banners saying “Lift the ban” and “Rent Control Now.” Two men dressed in suits and ties — one labeled “realtor,” the other labeled “politician” — threw fake money at each other.

(Debra Miller stands with a coalition of organizers rallying in support of lifting the ban on rent control.)(snip)

The 1997 Rent Control Preemption Act prohibits local governments from regulating the rise of commercial rents. (snip)

A more comprehensive rent control bill was brought forward by state Rep. Mary Flowers, a Democrat whose district includes part of Englewood. That legislation would create six rent control boards across the state and give tax incentives to landlords for improving properties.(snip)

In addition, voters in 18 precincts in four Northwest Side wards on Tuesday overwhelmingly backed a non-binding, advisory referendum asking if the state should “lift the ban on rent control to address rising rents, unjust evictions and gentrification in our community.”

Between 63 and 79 percent of voters voted “yes” in each of those precincts.

So she can afford Starbucks coffee, but can’t afford her rent. I’ll bet if she saved her Starbucks money, and made her own coffee she would have a better chance of paying her rent on time. I do.

Way to guarantee shortages.

So funny that the left, who accuses hard workers of “I got mine” mentality is trying to institute the ULTIMATE in that philosophy.

Easy to be “free” and “non-hating” if you’re promising people somebody else’s money.

Even works for a little while. Then, like NYC - everything fails when the workers, the owners, the builders get taken too often.

Of course they did. This is how the Rats win, pandering to class envy.

And you’ve got seniors living alone in big rent controlled apartments while young families with kids can’t find a place to rent.

By the way, it would be nice if I could afford to buy 3.00 and 5.00 dollar Starbucks coffee downtown - instead of a home-brewed 25 cents cup.

Seems to me that the mere threat of rent control would crash the value of rental properties so it’s sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy, at first.

It’s also an unconstitutional taking and the owners of such properties should be fairly compensated for their loss.

I’m not aware of that every having been pursued, though.

Plus owners can only afford to the do the minimum maintenance because of lost income by rent control. No remodeling upgrades.

Never trust an organization with a cute acronym, that’s a conclusion I reached decades ago. Case in point: ACORN.

"...And you’ve got seniors living alone in big rent controlled apartments while young families with kids can’t find a place to rent..."

There is the key.

They are guaranteeing that landlords will leave the arena, that properties won't be kept up, and no new ones will be built (except for high end luxury ones that will be exempt).

Then in a few years, we are going to hear them whine about how there isn't enough housing, and more government weight will be brought to bear on the issue in a variety of stupid and useless ways.

Rent control is the biggest impediment to available, affordable housing in places that have rent control. But Leftists like the challenged one pictured above are too damned ideological and stupid to understand something that has been shown to be true again, and again, and again.

Being a Leftist means you never have to know or acknowledge history.
