Keep Your Kids Close

On Friday evening my 13 daughter and I went to Target to shop and while I was looking at movie DVDs, my daughter went two aisles over to look at kid's books.

She ran to me a few minutes later, pale and unable to speak. I finally coaxed her to tell what happened and she said that a man tried to grab her. I asked her if the man was still there and she said yes. I took her with me to look and the realized that a man was behind us, about ten feet away. He was about 27-31 years old, six feet tall, black, wearing all black clothing and had long bushy hair covered by a hoodie. I turned to face him and asked "are you the guy that tried to grab my daughter?" and he grinned at me and said something I didn't hear (my daughters said it was obscenities). I said "If you go after people's daughters, your life is going to end early" and moved towards him. He said "hey, don't take things so seriously" and ran out of the store. A store employee saw part of this incident and told me that they knew the guy as a serial shoplifter and they had video of him.

I took my daughter home and called the police. The officer who showed up was curt and not friendly and did not appear to believe me or my daughter. I have left a message asking this officer to update me on the progress in finding this guy but no response so far.

Even though the cop doesn't seem to think this incident is important, finding this guy could be important to other young girls and their parents.

I had a similar situation in a GameStop store in SC. While we were in the checkout line, two men, one about 20ish and the other about 50ish started trying to chat up my 8 year old daughter- while I was standing right behind her. They made their purchase first and turned to leave the store. while my daughter made her purchase I looked to see where they were and they had not left the store. What they had done was the older one went behind a display on the left and the younger one went behind one on the right. While my daughter was paying for her item, I quietly opened my purse, took my pistol out of the holster, and put it in my hand. When we turned to leave, my daughter saw them and froze- I put my left hand on her shoulder and told her to start walking, she didn’t know I had my gun in my right hand. As we started walking out of the store the old man stepped closer to our aisle and got this weird grin on his face- until he saw the barrel of my gun pointed at him. When he saw it, he made some kind of grunting sound and made a crossing motion with his arms in the direction of the other one. We walked out of that store- I kept my gun by my side until we got out of the mall. We got into my car and I locked the doors. My daughter was in tears when we got into the car- she said she was so scared she didn’t know what to do. She said she was thankful I was with her because she felt like they would have tried to hurt her. She didn’t know I had my gun out until she saw me put it back into the holster- I told her she was right- they probably would have tried to hurt her but I wasn’t going to let them. I called the police to tell them what happened; I thought I may have overreacted a bit. But the lady who answered the phone told me I had probably just save my daughter from an abduction! I gave them a description of the two men and a squad car came out to look for them. After that, I called my husband and thanked him for my birthday present- which was a pistol and he paid for my CCP. Now where ever we go, my daughter asks if I have my “little friend” with me, which I always do.

Yeah, waiting to call until you get home made for a waste of everyone’s time. Did the store have no security?

The store has video of him shoplifting so they have video of him trying to snatch your daughter. Call the police again and ask to speak with the rude officer’s superior. Too scary to think next time the freak will grab a child. And with these guys, there will be a next time and the next and the next.

I once told the Kohl’s employees about a man in the women’s dressing room. They thought I was the crazy one and never did anything about him. He had planted himself in the end stall with the door open so he could see everyone who came in. Needless to say, we promptly left and have never set foot in Kohl’s since.

Thank you for your story and I'm very happy that you had the presence of mind and the gun to prevent something very awful from happening.

I have learned my lesson: I didn't have my cell phone on me or my pistol (I do have a CCW)but somehow I made the mistake of thinking that a quick visit to a large, well-lit store wouldn't be a problem.

I will follow your example in the future.

Hmm, wonder why the kids book section is a blind section. Pervy Target employees looking at kids? Fire them and install cameras, pronto. That’s a dangerous practice if all Targets choose not to keep the childrens’ sections safe.

Here's a safety bracelet (also necklace) that when pushed contacts 911 or your cell phone contacts. You must have a cell phone though.

carry something to fight. I will from now on.

Amen, brother. I don't carry because I'm looking for a fight. Quite the contrary, in fact ... Sometimes, fight come looking for you.

YOU: Double stack 1911 with extra mags. You could hold your own against an Infantry platoon.

ME: Yes, I have been in Walmart recently—I meant Target eh sort of same difference at least in my town no big problems at either...

ME That said, firing a 1911 could have a lot of collateral damage by CHILDREN’S books/DVDs. Not supposed to pull out firearm if not willing to use it; I certainly would be reluctant to ‘hold my own’ with innocent bystanders in crowded store.

How many mass shooters have the cops and crime family known as the Federal Bureau of Incompetence missed? I would contact the store and ask them to review video if they have it and then go to the department and ask for a detective and if they still blow you off go to the local newspaper or tv station.

Please upgrade your child security. May be time to plant location sensors in their clothes, and ensure usage each day. You have had your notice. Perhaps a secret camera or two on your kids would help. Also expose this store for it’s lack of camera coverage in a critical area. Happy “you” survived!

I’m so glad I gave You something to criticize. When I get pissed and upset that may happen.

I am glad I could fulfill Your quest for worrying about everything.

I really am concerned about what could have happened to this Child

Worried about everything? No, just amused at your off-the-charts hysteria.
