Keep Your Kids Close

On Friday evening my 13 daughter and I went to Target to shop and while I was looking at movie DVDs, my daughter went two aisles over to look at kid's books.

She ran to me a few minutes later, pale and unable to speak. I finally coaxed her to tell what happened and she said that a man tried to grab her. I asked her if the man was still there and she said yes. I took her with me to look and the realized that a man was behind us, about ten feet away. He was about 27-31 years old, six feet tall, black, wearing all black clothing and had long bushy hair covered by a hoodie. I turned to face him and asked "are you the guy that tried to grab my daughter?" and he grinned at me and said something I didn't hear (my daughters said it was obscenities). I said "If you go after people's daughters, your life is going to end early" and moved towards him. He said "hey, don't take things so seriously" and ran out of the store. A store employee saw part of this incident and told me that they knew the guy as a serial shoplifter and they had video of him.

I took my daughter home and called the police. The officer who showed up was curt and not friendly and did not appear to believe me or my daughter. I have left a message asking this officer to update me on the progress in finding this guy but no response so far.

Even though the cop doesn't seem to think this incident is important, finding this guy could be important to other young girls and their parents.

Uh, from the looks of your post, you already have a concussion. Lighten up. You weren’t there, so you don’t know.

Easy to say for you - since you weren't there. My duty at that exact moment, once I realized that he was behind me, was to stay with my daughter who was extremely shook up and shaking. I turned to face the guy and advanced on him - and he ran off. I had no one there to help me protect my daughter so I could try to chase him. Had he been within reach, I would have torn him apart. I was not armed, though that situation won't happen again.

Recommend: 1. that you realize the situation that I had with a deeply frightened daughter and no one around me 2. Not reach for the caps lock button too quickly.

“Watching out for vulnerable customers (like kids in the kid’s book section) might be something Target should care about.”

Naw, they’re too concerned about letting men use the girls restrooms. Can’t have any bad LGBTQ reports, ya know.

Ok, No I was not on scene. I still feel pretty damned certain that POS wouldn’t have gotten away had it been Me.

Sorry if the CAPS offended You.

Anybody else that wants to jump My case have at, feel free, do what you wish.

It’s going to be up to Us/Our Side to Stop this stuff from happening because the cops don’t care.

I notice in your ridiculous rage that your syntax and spelling got a little shaky.

For an older child, consider police-grade pepper spray. The Fox brand is good. But it is serious stuff. Make sure your child knows just how serious it is. Amazon carries it.

For a younger child, consider a pin-activated alarm. They're much easier to use than a whistle. Pull the pin, and you get a very loud alarm. There are many good ones on Amazon. Here's an example:

about 20 years ago I was at a mall store and there was a crush of people.

there was a little lost boy. I watched him. I could not identify his parents. I asked him if he could see his parents, he said no and was crying.

I told him we would find him.

I then started speaking loudly saying that the little boy was lost and to call security. I also started opening a space around the boy. The cashier called security and people stepped away leaving an open space around the boy. The parents arrived and security came and checked their identity and the family was reunited.

One of my daghters was followed around a store by a lesbian woman in men’s clothes and the woman kept telling her how pretty she was...

My daughter who was 11 came and told me, and I cornered the woman and told her to get lost.

IF this happened today, I would have called the police.

Then the store should have trespassed him long ago.

And it’s important that you posted this story. We all need an occasional reminder of the dangers that are out there.

And thank God your child is safe. For her own peace of mind, get her some sort of defensive tool, maybe an alarm like I mentioned in post #26.

Blind section?
That’s ridiculous!
I am surprised that area would be blind in first place, but seems to me that could be easily remedied.

That should have been the first thing the police did, however, in this case it doesn’t sound like they want to get involved.

No disrespect to you, but I find it hard to believe in this day and time that none of you got a high-quality cell phone pic of this scum. I don’t know of ANY kid that doesn’t walk around with that phone in their hand.

I found a little girl, around age 6, sobbing in Wal-Mart. She spoke English, thankfully. And like you I held her hand as we walked to find staff at the front of the store.

Even as a woman I thought about possible false accusations as I took a crying child who was obviously not mine by the hand. Poor thing was terrified, I couldn’t understand how any mother could be so far from her little girl that she couldn’t hear her crying.
