The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

I have one of those shelves. Getting ready to order another one or two; they are the perfect size for starting seeds. My immediate problem is going to be when the seeds need to move to more permanent accommodations. Been ‘planning’ (translation: avoiding the drive to town for as long as possible) to build some PVC shelves on wheels.
Really cold temps last night.
Our “beach house” couldn’t keep up with the cold and we almost lost our sprouts to dampening off.
Glad I went down there after 9 pm to check...
Temperatures are getting into the low 20’s tonight so I’ll have to cover up the sprouting seeds and flowering violas and dutch irises once again. Hope all is well with everyone in the group.
We had to bring in the seedling starts tonight from the green house due to low temps. At least we had some sunlight and warmth this afternoon.
Next 10 days looks to be improving.

I forgot to post this in the past, but I have a tree farm in the Florida Panhandle...at least I did. I have about 90 acres that were part of my grandmother and grandfather’s homestead in the early 1900’s. I inherited about 90 acres planted with pine trees that are almost 40 years old. The hurricane that hit Panama City last year was a direct hit and pretty much flattened everything, The eye went directly over my property and there are maybe 20% of the trees still standing. Trying to figure out what to do. Not much market for downed trees, but I need to get them cleared out so maybe paper pulp and then replant. I have to keep the land agricultural or the taxes will kill me.
That is a bummer. How soon do they need to be cleared before they have no value for anything except a fireplace? We came very close to loosing our fishing lodge to forest fire in the 80s
I don’t know how long they can be downed before being used for pulp wood. The forestry extension was going to evaluate my property and tell me the options. He was supposed to look at it last week, but I have not heard back yet.
