CHICAGO No reason to panic yet, but Chicago is sinking.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says the city is at least four inches lower today than it was 100 years ago. Areas farther north are higher, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The slow motion seesaw effect is a long term result of Ice Age glaciers that melted eons ago. The experts compare this to squeezing a tube of toothpaste in the middle with one side going up and the other going down.
The change could eventually redefine flood plains.
"If you're tilting one direction, the water flows might change direction or water might accumulate in a way different than you expected in the past, NOAAs Chief Geodesist Daniel Roman told the Tribune. Thats important for on-land and near-shore environments. You might get more water, but not where you want it.

I used to live in New Orleans

The Chicago problem is solving itself, and soon will disappear!
more MAGA!
And I don’t wanna swim.
is this sinking due to climate change somehow?
In a way, yes. When the glaciers melted thousands of years ago all the weight that compressed the earth underneath them was gone. So the land in some area began to expand. But its not completely uniform.
As some areas rise adjacent places sink lower. Then theres the fact that large areas of Chicago are built on landfill which is still compacting.
Chicago has big problems, thats for sure. But the city itself is an engineering marvel.
L
Just like New Orleans, built on a swamp and filled with swamp creatures.
“because the streets had been rebuilt at a new level”.
The City is built over a former tropical sea bed where billions of dead mollusks formed a sandstone base.
Bridgeport and older sections of McKinley Park are like that. Go down some of the side streets and one will see brick cottages with steps going down to what looks like to a basement but are really 1st floor main entrances below street level.
Chicago is 4” lower? Good. Keeps the s&^% in the toilet bowel.
” . . . out to Maywood Park, and there were whole neighborhoods where the front yards were down in a hole . . .”
That’s actually still the case in some of Chicago proper. In the South Side neighborhood called “South Chicago” (centered roughly at 92nd and Exchange), if you go to Google maps and “walk” along Houston Avenue in the street view, from roughly 93rd to maybe 89th, you can see that the first floor bases of many of the houses are a couple of feet below the street level.
Given the amount of the city that was built on swamp, I’m surprised it’s sunk only 4 inches.
Thank you for mentioning that.
Raising of Chicago
Oprah’s fat ass.
It’s due to all the gunfire. Lead is heavy.
“but Chicago is sinking”
oh, hogwash ... everyone knows the lakes are rising ... because global warming ...
Made me laugh.
Yes, all those skyscrapers. What they should do is relocate those skyscrapers throughout the entire Midwest so as to more evenly distribute the weight. Problem solved.
The lake level rose 4 inches ... due to global warming ...
Equilibrium from the glacial times. It must have risen a little too much in past years.
“The Chicago problem is solving itself, and soon will disappear!”
I’m about 50 klicks off the beach, how long until I have my own beachfront?
Will all the old flooded out houses block my view of the sunrise?
