In a blow for fans of sporting stubble, Japanese sumo officials have shown their razor sharp intent by banning wrestlers from growing beards.A number of superstitious sumo wrestlers choose not to shave their beards during competition, believing that such a move would bring about bad luck.

But in a sweeping new move that has also outlawed tattoos and long nails, the sport’s authorities have declared that any failure to adhere to the new rules will leave wrestlers a whisker away from trouble.

I seem to recall some very old Japanese art with sumo wrestlers that had the Fu Manchu type of thing going on. I could be wrong, but will have to go digging in the books to find out this weekend.
