The mountain lion a Colorado runner claimed to have killed in January was a young kitten, according to wildlife officials.
Travis Kauffman, 31, strangled and bludgeoned the cat to death on Feb. 4 at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space in Larimer County, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said in a necropsy report published by Fox affiliate KDVR.
The mountain lion was determined to be around 3 to 4 months old and weighed 24 pounds at the time of its necropsy. The animal was scavenged after its death.
Kauffman told reporters earlier this month that he engaged in what was "just like a wrestling match" with the lion, after it attacked him while he was running alone.

Like I stated, the attack did occur but the cub being a cub should have scampered off once it realized that it was not match for its foe. Could be that the cub was orphaned and starving or was rabid which might explain why it didn’t break off the attack. Too many questions and not enough answers to definitively come to a solid conclusion. Only the runner knows the full story and with this being a young cub he’s probably going to stick to the narrative that doesn’t make him look bad. Cheers!
As it attacked, the cub growled "this is MAGA country" and threw bleach on his sandwich or something. Better?
Anyone who has tried to get a cat to swallow a pill knows that a cat even half that size can be deadly!
Perhaps the mother had cut the cub loose and it was starving, not having perfected its hunting skills yet. That sounds rather young for a mom puma to cut her babies loose completely. Or, it had an injury which prevented it from getting faster prey like rabbits.
” This was no Jussie Smolett situation.”
Unless it was some other pussy he was messing with.
Maybe he has pictures. Of the Cat, I mean.
Necropsy IDs mountain lion killed by Fort Collins trail runner as a kittenThe necropsy performed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife veterinarians in Fort Collins identified the lion as a "kitten'' with a weight of 24 pounds. However, the animal was heavily scavenged and officials estimated the animal's live weight was 35 to 40 pounds. The report listed the animal in "fair condition'' with no diseases noted.
As a parallel, some people might look at a chimpanzee as a small person, and how much damage could a chimp cause? Apparently a lot from all accounts.
No, I don't think the animal is one to discount. Although, like others, I thought "Damn, killed it with his hands...that's gnarly tough."
Remember that movie with a young Ann-Margaret?
It was called “Kitten With A Whip”.
I think John Forsythe was also in it.
Off Topic, yes. The title just came to mind.
Now think of a cat that was 35-40 lb.s. See post #27.
Something seems off about the description. An article about a young cougar that wandered into a bakery listed it as 4 months old and 50 pounds, and it wasn’t even healthy. If this one one was 24 pounds after being scavenged, it could have easily been closer to 40 or 50 pounds and far more dangerous than a 24 pound kitten.
It’s a little suspicious that they’re trying to make this cat into a cute and cuddly kitten that was killed by the big bad human. The man certainly looked injured by more than tiny claws.
They are weaned at about 2 or 3 months and stay with the mother for 13 to 24 months. This is all general observation. Animals don’t read textbooks and sometimes are left to their own devices early if their mother isn’t Mom of the Year.
Anyone who has wrestled with a non-human wild thing knows their animal strength lb for lb, with the wildness in it generally makes it something humans don’t want to tangle with.
Yes, I do! :)
Maybe it didn’t “break off the attack” because this guy had it by the neck.
Re: “24 lbs of likely pure animal muscle is nothing to be sneezed at.”
Most humans do not understand animal strength.
When a human does a chin up, perhaps just 50% of the relevant muscle cells are firing.
That is because humans have fine motor skills that are without equal in the animal kingdom.
When a chimpanzee does a chin up, close to 100% of the relevant muscle cells are engaged.
Most humans are completely shocked at the power and aggression of larger animals, like deer.
From a purely evolutionary point of view, this makes perfect sense.
No species can last for millions of years if it doesn’t know how to fight, or is unwilling to fight for its life.
I was “attacked” by a lion cub, once. It was probably 25 pounds. It grabbed my Levi’s near my ankle, rolled over once, and cut off the circulation to my foot. Little bastard was just playing, but he had flopped over, and was just dead weight.
