Hold tight! Take a wild sled dog ride with 4-time Iditarod champ Jeff King
The 2014 Iditarod trail includes some of the toughest mushing in the history of the race, veterans said. Especially early along the trail, mushers were battered and bruised on snowless ground. Four-time winner Jeff King shot this footage using a helmet cam between Rainy Pass, in the Alaska Range, and the Rohn checkpoint on Monday, March 3. The video was provided to the Anchorage Daily News (adn.com/Iditarod) by Iditarod Insider (www.iditarod.com.) The talk of the trail this year, it's one of the first-ever looks at what a musher sees while crossing some of the trickiest corners of the 1,000-mile race.
alaska ping
and you are welcome :)
Interesting.
Lotsa Bare Spots and some PLYWOOD!
Who knew?
I signed a petition against the Iditarod today. Apparantly the poor dogs are treated like shit and even one was shot for running too slow. It’s all about winning the money. Disgusting.
and you believe everything PETA tells you?
That is complete horse-crap. I hope you are kidding. Ive known a ton of mushers and they live for those dogs.
I hope you are right, but I have my doubts
Don’t believe PETA.
Go to Alaska and visit the dog musher compounds.
Many are open to tourists.
The dogs are treated very well.
I call BS... mushers have been known to put injured dogs on the sled if they cannot keep up. Sled dogs are valuable.
That is a LOT scarier than I imagined!
I can see how Sarah Palin’s husband got injured doing that.
Thank You again Morgana.
Alaska Ping.
Lol, the video reminds me of taking our rescue greyhounds for a walk : )
WOW!
Looked fast!
So I looked around...
sled dogs may average 10 to 14 miles per hour during the course of a day of mushing
Even for a born musher, pulling sleds up to 100 miles in a day is hard work. Sled dogs require a lot of calories — up to 12,000 calories per day. A diet consisting of meat, fish and commercial dog food, fed many times throughout the day, keeps the dogs going.

Thats one event for some stupidly run tourist group managed by a moron. Has NOTHING to do with how the vast majority of sledders treat their dogs.
I’m surprised at you.
The dogs are bred for it, they love it. They train like athletes all year around. If youve ever watched a sled dog race, you would see how excited those dogs are to run!
I have heard of people who live in shacks and all their income goes to the dogs, literally! They pay big money for all the vet bills and everything associated. Most mushers barely get by. We are supposed to believe then, that the mushers just shoot and abuse the dogs when they dont perform!? Ive seen mushers weep when they have lost dogs. Come on. Pure fake news.

Above is closer to what Todd Palin was doing. Snowmobile (snow machine in Alaska) racing at night. (He crashed when it was dark). Although he was doing it on an extended day cross-country race - not a track like the above video.

Above is a better (and scarier) video of a snowmobile at night on a trail. Probably more like what Palin was doing.
