Note on Laptop: "Your internet camera has been activated for census purposes" (vanity)
Rooster Redux

Posted on 02/26/2019 12:57:55 AM PST by RoosterRedux

I just got up and turned on my laptop to check on the news at FR and the strangest message popped up on my computer.

It said something to the effect of:

"Your computer's internet camera as been activated for census purposes."
I immediately went to Device Manager and disabled it.

That said, what the h$ll just happened here? Was someone or some agency able to access my camera remotely and without my permission?

Scary stuff.

Put black electrical tape, a small piece, over every camera on every laptop and every cell phone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve done that for years.
I suspect that he will be asked for his ssn now (bank number would be helpful as well as any other private information.) Any nude photos should be forwarded to this site immediately for verification by the internet camera...Lol.
I’ve had pictures of ME sent to ME that were taken from my OWN webcam!!
I was looking at some porn, which yes I am ashamed of
This is why it's importent to not cheat on your porn sites!
Find a small handful of trustworthy sites and stick with those! If they've been around for a long time, they're probably not infected with a bunch of malware and all those annoying pop-ups. Usually, the links are safe. It's when you go down the rabbit hole into all those lesser-known sites, that's when problems happen.
And if you wish to be a true connoisseur of porn, buy a Mac.
With Windows, everything is about convenience. An executive doesn’t want to have to turn on his camera in order for it to work.
I don’t need antivirus. I run Linux.
Security by obscurity is not security!
Well, they've come to the right house to start eliminating cow farts.
As I have said elsewhere, I've got a tomcat that emits more methane than a herd of buffalo.
I'll turn the camera on him and light a match to prove my point.
I have a webcam on my PC as well. What I’ve done to keep it from spying on me is to take a business card, place it over the lens, and tape it down. Made a little tape tab, so I can temporarily remove the “lens cover” if I actually do want to use the webcam.
Low tech solutions to high tech problems.
Wow.
Bad news in multiple ways, those sites.
I’ll look at G rated model sites if I get the urge :)
All my ports are locked down. I run intrusion detection. My browsing and email are in a non-privileged sandboxed VM. I honestly don’t need antivirus. It is not that I am obscure, I am secure.
That appeared in our main Lab neighborhood’s list of nearby networks a few weeks ago. Hasn’t been detected yet in our remote desert location.
It won’t help. We have people get infected trying to find code examples. If you leave a commercial site up long enough, you can expect malware. Companies can’t control their banner ads.
If you are going to browse around, you should create a user with the lowest level of authority and use it to browse. If all you got was malware, count your blessings. I left a share open on the work network with no security as a test and it got ransomed in a few days.
IS THAT why when I leave my laptop open for hours and go out it takes forever to get it going again and it runs so slow?
Does just leaving site up leave me open to malware?
If it has banner ads and they cycle, malware is possible.
1/ Take a picture of yourself with the builtin webcam; make sure you are wearing a bandanna on your face and holding a sign that says “Microsoft S*cks!”
2/ Put a small piece of blue painters tape over the camera lens, and only remove it when you are doing a video call with someone you trust. If someone sees it and says you’re paranoid, tell them to look up “fbi director covers webcam with tape”.
3/ Send a letter to your congressman requesting they create legislation requiring amputation of hands for all serious hackers.
[a built-in sliding shutter to disable the camera]
I have (or had - think I still have them) a couple of cameras that actually had that. Turns out, after I bought them, they were incompatible for some odd reason, and I didn’t return them - oops.
I still think back to a former boss who was all excited to get his camera set up. So he goes online, and somebody wants to chat with him. First thing he gets is some dude in his underwear shaking his behind at him.
Of course he disconnected immediately. I asked “What did you think would happen?” - LOL.
