FULL TITLE: Australian cartoon of Serena Williams' epic meltdown at the US Open 'ISN'T racist and doesn't depict her as an ape', watchdog rules
A cartoon of Serena Williams published in the aftermath of her US Open final defeat to Naomi Osaka was not racist, a watchdog has found.
Williams suffered an extraordinary meltdown during her loss to Naomi Osaka in the US Open final in September - calling umpire Carlos Ramos a thief for taking a point away from her.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion was penalised a point for a second offence, smashing her racket, and then a game after she verbally abused Ramos.
In the aftermath, the Herald Sun published a cartoon of Williams, with some believing the tennis star was depicted as an ape.

I seem to recall John McEnroe having been penalized a few times for outbursts.
Although it may be unreasonable to think she was being depicted as an ape it certainly wasn't a very flattering cartoon.
Serena’s 2009 meltdown got one of the biggest fines ever. Repeat offender.
If the “watchdog” found it wasn’t racist, I don’t know why the mod would remove it, unless it’s for copyright reasons.

Sounds like one of those “you’re the one with all the dirty pictures” bits.
Now that is a funny picture!
You reckon that might've been precisely the point ?
It was spot on, imho.
If one knows the rules, ethics and courtesies of professional tennis then they understand how out of line and outrageous Serena Williams
behavior was at the US OPEN.
Youve been here since 1999 and you dont know why that cartoon was removed? Why dont you ask the moderator why. You wont get an answer. But you really shouldve known better.
“In the illustration, Williams (pictured) is shown with an enlarged lips and nose, and her cheekbones have been emphasised”
It’s called a caricature and for any tangential ties of racism you could find, demonstrates your lack of character...
Some mod would routinely delete all sorts of posts making fun of Big Mike. I was called a racist by one of them for pointing out the books burned at that Ferguson library would never be read by the perps to begin with.
That was it for me.
She’s still a boon to the sport of tennis.
What part of “Do Not Post GETTY IMAGES” are you not understanding?
Look at the posting guidelines again. It is VERY clearly noted that GETTY IMAGES are NOT ALLOWED, for ANY reason.
I'll not be holding my breath waiting for your apology.
Not racist unless showing she’s fat and out of shape counts as racist these days...then Oprah needs to rethink her diet plans...
What part of Do Not Post GETTY IMAGES are you not understanding?

Ahem.
Just for the record, I said that I didn’t know why the image was removed, but I suggested it might have been for copyright reasons. Evidently, I was right.
On the other hand, some moderator deleted my post so you can no longer READ that.
When moderators start deleting harmless posts we have a problem here. There was NO reason for that post to be deleted. NONE.
I apologize. The post wasn’t deleted after all - my search for it simply failed.
FTR...
I am quite cognizant of the “getty rule” and those images always have the getty logo imposed on the image in a large font to be easily seen.
The cartoon image I posted DID NOT HAVE THE GETTY LOGO embedded in the image and hence my posting.
Later I did return to the original article and saw the getty note in small font at the bottom of the cartoon...and why I missed it.
That said...
A simple post from you noting the small getty notation would have sufficed; however, you chose to post an arrogant personal attack typical a 5 y/o child.
This childish & arrogant totalitarianism is becoming more frequent on FR (i.e. “bagster”)...so thanks for your help in perpetuating such culture.
