Study: High-carb, low-protein diets may extend lifespan

Feb. 19 (UPI) -- A nutrient once thought to be healthy if eaten in abundance may actually cut life short, a new study says.

A low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet has been linked to living longer and maintaining brain health, according to a study published this month in Current Biology.

Eating too much protein, Proud says, can speed up protein synthesis, which quickly causes a build-up of "faulty protein" -- leading to a likelihood of early death. The researchers tested this theory by feeding high protein diets to fruit flies and worms.

"Since this link also operates in humans, our findings show how lower protein consumption could promote longevity in people," Proud said.

However, Proud not only recommends eating less protein but also more carbohydrates, which many have long-associated with an unhealthy diet.

"Carbohydrates get a lot of bad press, especially in relation to dieting, but the key is balance and knowing the difference between 'good' carbs and 'bad' carbs," Proud said.

No group of people try fad diets more than firefighters, and people who visit Free Republic. One of my last drivers before I retired ballooned up to well over 400 lbs and had to be reassigned to communications because he couldn't perform his duties any more.

He shared my love of homemade smoked meats something that has added considerably to my own waistline over the years. My driver's problem was that he thought if he cut out all "carbs" from his diet and only ate massive quantities of his beloved meats and bacon that he would lose weight and make him healthier. It not only added another 100 lbs., it put him in the hospital.

It’s very simple.

Calories in - Calories out = X

X > 0 = Fat
X < 0 = Not Fat

FYI - The Mediterranean diet has been debunked.

I would question the science of this study as well.

Basically, whether carbs or proteins, if you overeat you’ll be dead sooner. It ain’t rocket science.

I always say....if you just eat what you like instead of they you need you are doing yourself an Injustice. The toungue is the biggest deceiver. It will convince you to eat so much of what you don’t need and make you say things you should never say. Beware of your tongue!

Can someone point to an “essential” carb?

The best thing for me was finding out what foods I was allergic to. Made my IBS go away and lost 25lbs. Tha later was watching my diet better along with dropping pork products (allergy).

I found after I was diagnosed with type II, and did many things to modify my diet was that it was 100% necessary to have carbs to function. I have one of those high stress, 90% travel jobs where you work 14 hour days regularly while away from home for months at a time. I eat bad, drink way too much, don’t excercise enough, and though I wasn’t ridiculously overweight (210 at 6’1) I still needed to lose at least 30 pounds. I had an A1C of 13 (normal is below 5.7) which translates to an average blood sugar of almost 350 at all times, and my doctor basically said I could not eat anything at all that was white in color, no fruit, bread, carbs of any kind, ever basically may as well eat paste. I really do like food, and luckily am a very good cook and do enjoy cooking, once I got the “trendy” instant pot pressure cooker, all bets were off. I did try very hard at first to follow a very strict diet. I was rewarded with frequent hypoglycemia, and I was very lethargic, and over time started to trend anemic. The cure was worse than the disease. So I really started to intensely educate myself, and really learning about foods and body chemistry, and discovered over time that I could cook food that is as tasty or even better than what I ate before with simple common sense choices, to the point that I still eat all of my favorite foods, including carbs, and in the last two years my A1C dropped from 13 to 6.1 (almost normal) while enjoying everything I eat, and if I don’t get ridiculous, my blood sugar rarely goes above 140 no matter what I eat including the occasional ice cream or bear claw. Now if I can figure out how to cure hypertension.

My wife and I eat a lot of low carb veggies and a lot of avocados and nuts (particularly nuts).

I don’t see how this study makes carbs any more healthy.

We eat a lot of fat and protein. Our blood work is great and we don’t work out.

Part of the push from the left to eliminate meat from our diet.

Smells like bull crap to me. Carbs have been linked to inflammation. Inflammation does not and cannot extend life.
